NBC Boston channel speculation.

Is WBTS-LD now using virtual channel 8 instead of 60? According to the FCC it is. http://transition.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/tvq?call=WBTS-LD
On both WBTS and WNEU NBC will be 8.1 and Telemundo will be 60.1? And NBC gets on Cable and Satellite as channel 8, right next to channel 7.

WBTS is still using 60-1 (Telemundo), 60-2 (Xitos), and 60-3 (Cozi). They might be planning to leave it that way until NBC Boston starts. Some viewers still think that the low numbers are the important channels and the high numbers are just UHF, with old reruns... On cable and satellite, retransmission consent could get them on a low channel anyway - but it is a smart move to have the consistent 8. It will probably be an annoyance to Ed Ansin, also...

If Comcast didn't care about OTA, they'd let NBC Boston be a cable channel. They must be still looking for a "whole market" solution.

Even if only 5% of the southern Boston audience is OTA, that's enough for their spot rates to take a dip. NBC would just be giving up news viewers in southern Boston to WCVB, WHDH, WBZ and WFXT.

Even though the Providence station's signal might provide NBC to the area, it won't make up the money for any OTA loss. Providence ad-buyers aren't going to pay extra for part of Boston.

But aren't the cable/satellite viewers seen by the advertisers as more valuable than the too-poor/too-cheap/too-old/too-tech-challenged folks who watch OTA TV?

Having NBC Boston on cable channel 8 will work to their advantage they can include it in the station id if need be.

If they're in the demo (usually ages 25-54 for news and ages 18-49 for most other programming), advertisers care about them.

Hey, what about Telemundo? What's gonna happen to it? I'd like to know where it's going!

Doesn't matter where it goes. It'll still map to 60.1 on both WNEU and WBTS and the cable & Satellite providers will probably keep it where it is on the lineup. It appears that NBC will be 8.1 and it will probably be on a subchannel of both WNEU & WBTS and it will map to 8.1 on both. NBC will probably ask for 8 on non Comcast owned providers and I assume Comcast will just put it on 8 and 808.

Wait I thought WBTS is listed as 46?

But I say WBTS would only by identified as "NBC Boston" kind of like KNTV San Jose is simply called "NBC Bay Area" due to the fact that Xfinity puts NBC Bay Area on 703 while Dish, At&t and OTA has KNTV on channel 11. the reason KNTV became "NBC Bay Area" was a few things. KNTV was originally going to brand "NBC 3" but in some parts of Solano County in California NBC on channel 3 meant Hearst owned NBC Affiliate KCRA Sacramento.
Solano County Residents are split as Sacramento DMA and San Francisco DMA and all of Solano county cable systems carried either Sacramento or San Francisco Bay Area via Comcast. Well other Bay Area counties did not have the problem of Channel 3 being occupied by another NBC station that Solano county residents did.

That can't happen. WNEU and WMTW have significant areas of overlap. More likely you'll have NBC on 8.1 and 60.3 with Telemundo on 60.1 and 8.3. (Or similar.)

808 is the channel assigned for WLVI (HD) on many (all?) of the Boston area Comcast systems. That number is probably included in their retransmission consent agreement. An argument could be made that the official OTA virtual channel number would take precedence, but owner Ed Ansin would not take any change by Comcast to this lightly.

NBC Boston on 8.1 and 60.2
Telemundo Boston on 60.1 and could be on 8.2, unless if Cozi TV takes over that subchannel.
