NBC Boston channel speculation.

NBC Boston on 8.1 and 60.2
Telemundo Boston on 60.1 and could be on 8.2, unless if Cozi TV takes over that subchannel.

Pretty sure if you read what NBC said, a subchannel on WNEU will map to 8.2 and have NBC and then likely a subchannel on WBTS will map to 60.1 or 60.2 and have Telemundo.

Postcard from Xfinity.Among changes: Dec 1,NECN HD to 840,WBTS TV HD to 810, Cozi TV to 935...Dec 30,WWDP-TV moves from CH 10 to 81.WBTS TV to CH 10. WBTS starts NBC Jan 1

I think WHDH's sister station, WSVN in Miami, would tell you it's the best thing that ever happened to them.

WHDH already has a strong news presence in Boston. It's going to take NBC Boston several years to be competitive.

But KRON in San Francisco stopped being one of the best stations in the Bay Area once Chronicle Broadcasting sold the station to Young Broadcasting and later Media General. KRON was good when they had the NBC affiliation prior to 2001-2002 era and has not recovered since and had some of the best talent leave the station. How do you know for sure this is not a repeat of what happen to KRON once they lost the NBC affiliation? Even KRON has been a My Network TV affiliate for a decade but the damage is done here.

Maybe this is analogous to the CBS stations which flipped to Fox more than 20 years ago. They lost CBS News and instead built up their own local news. And CBS had to pick up a UHF station in Detroit and they don't do local news there at all - they just need an outlet to get CBS on cable in Detroit. Maybe that's all NBC wants won't bother with local news.

The difference is... WSVN went all-out with local news and did it in a way that resonated with the south Florida audience.

KRON tried. But the new owners were in financial straits after winning a bidding war to get the station. They didn't have more to heavily invest in news.

I fully expect WHDH's situation to be much like their sister station's.

WBTS moved to virtual ch. 8.1 with NBC Boston Countdown

This evening the 60's are gone. Now the virtual channels are:

ch 8.1, WBTS-LD, running Dateline and various NBC promos with the on-screen bug - "52 days countdown to NBC Boston".

Telemundo is on 8.2, Cozi on 8.3 and Telexitos on 8.4.

With 4 virtual channels, how is the quality looking? Are NBC and Telemundo going to appear on par with the other networks?

On WBTS - NBC Boston (8.1) and Telemundo (8.2) both look excellent in 1080i. Cozi (8.3) and Telexitos (8.4) in 480i look like they aren't getting much of the bandwidth, but are not bad. That's as it should be. I can't receive WNEU - so no comment on that.

How about cable (Comcast) in the Upper Valley area of New Hampshire (Hanover, Lebanon), where I have family? Will either NBC Boston or WBTS be available so far from Boston. Right now, Comcast carries Boston's NBC, ABC and CBS affils, but not Fox or any of the stations that don't do news of their own.

Surprised to see Comcast carrying Boston NBC when WNNE (31) is right in your back yard......??!!
I'm wondering where TDS Telecom in the Concord (Chichester/Loudon) area will spot WBTS-LD....presently there's an "open" HD channel (1008) that MIGHT be used....

If those are in the Boston DMA, then Comcast should carry it.

will nbc boston be able to view in southeastern MA and RI like the other boston channels?

Cox in RI doesn't carry any Boston channels other than WGBH. On the MA side, Comcast in Bristol County carries both MA and RI stations, so I'd expect them to carry WBTS. Probably not on channel 10, though.

Over-the-air seems doubtful. That said, these viewers should have no problems pulling in WJAR.

WHDH already has a strong news presence in Boston. It's going to take NBC Boston several years to be competitive.

But NBC Boston is no startup. NECN has been around for 20+ years, and the combined operation has spent the last year grabbing top talent -- many of whom are WHDH alumni.

It's going to be an uphill battle for WHDH, but I think it's WFXT that's the canoe without a paddle in the Boston news world.
