NBC Boston channel speculation.

Keep in mind that network affiliates give up a lot of commercial time and air time. That may be good if the network is #1. But if it's not, then it can be an advantage when the station competes for high quality off-network programming, or if the station creates its own content. The WHDH brand is very strong in Boston, and if they quickly replace the network programming with equally strong material, they'll do just fine.

How is the WHDH brand strong? How does the brand make people want to watch syndicated junk wrapped around 11 hours of news a day?

In terms of the money demographic for news (people 18-54), in October, WHDH had the highest rated newscast at 11 PM, 5PM and Noon. They were number two at 6 AM and 6 PM. In terms of total audience, they're number two in most time slots.

It doesn't appeal to everyone, but clearly they've got a fan base.

NECN drew a fraction of the audience of any of the broadcast stations in the most recent ratings I could find.

Why don't WHDH add syndicated and CW programming from WLVI to fill air time instead of a 12-hour news day.

1. For syndicated shows, the station gives up about half of the commercial time to the syndicator.

So a syndicated show's ratings would have to be double that of the newscast for the station to earn the same amount of money.

In most cases, the station also pays a fee to the syndicator for the program. (Not to mention: there are not a lot of syndicated "hits" to choose from these days.)

2. The CW programming is actually a worse situation than syndicated.

The station only gets a fraction of the commercial time during network programming.

The CW's ratings aren't that great, so the station won't make much money from the commercial time it DOES get.

The CW doesn't provide a strong lead-in for news or whatever program airs after prime.

Comcast in the Boston area added WBTS (ota ch 8_1) on channel 810 today, moving NECN from there to 840. They also added Cozi (ota 8_3) on 935.

Per a post elsewhere -DirectTV also added WBTS on 810 today.

Not 810, DirecTv added WBTS on both Ch 10 SD on the 101 satellite & Ch 10 HD on one of the newer HD 99/103 satellites. They also took WNEU Ch 60 SD off the 101 satellite. WNEU is only on 60 HD on one of the 99/103 satellites now. Ran out of room on the 101 satellite for any new broadcast channels?

Is WBTS on FiOS yet?

DTV & Dish haven't a lot of extra bandwidth so they don’t usually carry subchannels either. A post on AVS Forum said FIOS had not added WBTS yet. I haven’t see any mention of Dish or RCN.

Any idea where TDS Telecom is putting the new NBC???!!
Right now WNEU-60 (Telemundo) is on (HD) channel 1034....
Don't know where SD channel is....

One would think Markey just noticed the affiliation change... The article is typical of the Globe these days, very short on details and leaving out the effect of the government's spectrum auction, related freezes, etc., and not explaining that WBTS has only a low-power license.

Some of the reader comments are hilarious, one stating the WBTS engineers are at fault because they can't "push" the signal out far enough, and suggesting the FCC should just give NBC back to WHDH....

Why would the Senators of Massachusetts go on a rant over WBTS and their signal issues? This makes no sense? I don't remember Nancy Pelosi, Barbara Boxer and Dianne Feinstein ranting over NBC programming moving from KRON to KNTV in 2001-2002 when NBC bought KNTV and Young got KRON at the time. Or Signal issues from KNTV at the time. Note KNTV had the Loma Prieta Peak and signal range was limited to the South Bay at the time before the move to the San Bruno mountains at a later time to get most parts of the bay area.
