Currently, NBC owns KMAS-24 Steamboat Springs (no signal in Denver, way too many mountains in the way and low power) as well as a pair of translators on channels KMAS-LP 63 (CP to move to 33) and KSBS-LP 47 in Denver. Looks like NBC will be putting Telemundo on KDEN-25.

No word on the fate of KMAS-24 and the pair of translators.

I believe HSN. That's what they're listed as.

Not sure if it's HSN, but it is one of those home shopping stations.

I thought NBC was broke. Isn't that why they are selling stations? They are broke, but they can afford to buy a station? Sounds like an oxymoron to me.

Well, Nexstar did the same thing a couple of years ago. When I worked for Nexstar, they pissed and moaned to us they didn't have any money, but they wound up buying three stations...and shortly after that, purchasing all the Quorum stations. It's all bulls*it if you ask me.

It's actually Shop@Home TV that KDEN currently broadcasts.

NBC isn't "broke" but they are selling their smallest market stations. I think the KDEN transaction gives an indication of their strategy: Lower the total percentage reach of their stations by selling the small-percentage stations, then go after duopolies in larger markets.

Smart for them to do it now, while UHFs only count for half in the nationwide percentage calculation; it's likely, given the nature of DTV, that the formula will be changed when analog is shut off and existing duopolies will be grandfathered in at the "old" half-credit.<P ID="signature">______________

I agree here, it was my understanding that once DTV transition is final the Big Four will lose the UHF discount, followed by the rest of the owners

Another question I have is what is the DTV signal and channel for KDEN like now? Could NBC be thinking of having an O&O on a UHF which is better for digital, eventually.

The digital is right now at really really low power on channel 29. They do not broadcast from the same location as most of the other Denver stations (Lookout Mountain), which despite the reduced signal, actually gives them an advantage since they don't have to fight NIMBY groups in Golden tooth and nail to do anything.

It's because of those groups that most of the major stations in Denver have very weak digital signals, coming from the Republic Plaza (don't know if the name's right) downtown. To give you an idea:

KUSA-DT 16 doing 10.9 kW from downtown (NBC)
KMGH-DT 17 doing 6.5 kW from downtown, just moved off the roof of their building to RP (ABC)
KRMA-DT 18 doing 13.8 kW from downtown (PBS)
KTVD-DT 19 doing 6 kW from downtown (UPN)
KDVR-DT 32 doing 223 kW DA from Lookout (FOX)
KWGN-DT 34 doing 450 kW DA from Lookout, due to NIMBY suit cannot be licensed, on an STA (WB)
KCNC-DT 35 doing 11 kW from downtown (CBS)
