NBC Closing Ceremonies Fiasco

As Deadspin points out NBC edited out 51 minutes, 23 seconds of the ceremony to make room for 'Animal Planet'.

They even edited out the National Anthem of Great Britain.

As famed writer Ken Levine reports - Animal Practice was 'cancelled' by the time the west coast feed was sent out at 7 PM PDT and it was not seen. This reminds me of ABC cancelling a show after 15 minutes - (Turn On in 1969 )

Who made the call to not show Animal Planet in the west?

You still have time to edit your post to say "Animal Practice", a TV series, instead of Animal Planet, a cable channel.

And there is a topic on this:

Can a mod fix it please.

Turns out Ken Levine was wrong saying it did not air out west but that showed is now doomed.

The bulk of Levine's comments were dead on.

I thought the premiere of "Animal Practice" got bumped to late-night out West.

The obvious solution was to have cut the Olympic highlights show to 30-45 minutes. That would probably have allowed NBC to show the entire (except for a few minutes of commercials during lulls) Closing Ceremony prior to 11 P.M. EDT.

Fenway 1912: Didn't the premiere of "Turn On" get dumped halfway through the half hour with a sitcom rerun filling the rest of the half-hour and the show not airing at all ion the Mountain and Pacific time zones??

All depends on the station -- ABC fed the show in its entirety, with some stations in the east bailing out before it ended, with some western stations, after catching wind of what happened back east, declining to show it. Technically, it was not cancelled until several days later, when ABC and its sponsor, Bristol Myers, realised that they were fighting a losing battle:

Send a pm to the mod requesting a fix. Ask nicely, and don't forget to say please!
I'm sure that might get it fixed! 8)

Even "Emily's Reasons Why Not" and "Manimal" think "Animal Practice" is doomed.

The problem here was also that the Olympics was painted as a reality show for Michael Phelps and the US gymnast team and US basketball team. There was more hype on those sports then Boxing, indoor Volleyball and even Wimbledon II.

And last night on WWE Raw, commentator Michael Cole kissed NBC's collective backside big time, glowing and saying what a tremendous job NBC did with it all. Of course, the Monday night show airs on USA Network. Their Friday night show, WWE Smackdown!, airs on SyFy. Yes, they're both under the giant Comcast/NBC/Universal umbrella. I felt like I was going to puke after this one!

Considering the general tone of Raw and his past character on same, I'll betcha Coley was being very sarcastic. Meanwhile...

"Animal" was bumped out of primetime everywhere. As soon as it came on, I switched over to the news on KOMO. I'll bet a fair number of people did the same thing - or called it a night altogether.

No doubt NBC affiliates were uttering a collective moan over the network's decision to air "Animal Practice" right after the closing ceremonies at 10:55PM ET, delaying the news afterward. No doubt many viewers already bailed when after the torch went out, Bob Costas threw it to commercial to "wrap things up", not knowing that there's more to come after the crappy sitcom and the late news.

No doubt there are some who would rather just show the news at 11 and delay the sitcom to later.

Yeah, I imagine a lot of affiliates would have preferred having their local news at their usual 11:00pm/10:00pm, followed by the "closing party/wrapup" at 11:30. In fact, I'm sure taking an extra ten minutes for The Who and passing to affiliates at 11:10 would have been perfectly acceptable as well.

correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't NBC cut away from the last olympics to air some show produced by Jerry Sienfeld? Marraige Ref or something like that. It was also a flop, just like Animal practice will be. I can understand NBC needing to squeeze in commercial to pay for the broadcast, but the constant plugs for their own shows makes NBC look like an infomercial for itself.

In terms of "Animal Practice", we can chalk it up to NBC repeating itself -- with "The Marriage Ref", that series also bumped the end of the closing ceremonies to after the late news, received alot of complaints from viewers on NBC's treatment of the ceremonies, and the fact that the show was deemed by critics as awful. The show, however, survived long enough to have 19 episodes over two seasons.

Michael Cole is the reason I keep the volume on mute whenever I happen to watch RAW. Personally, I can't stand the WWE commentary teams on either show. If it weren't for the "attitude era" stars like The Rock and Austin showing up every now and then, I wouldn't bother with this product anymore.

Anyway, I'm not surprise NBC pull this kind of a stunt with the closing ceremony. I think until NBC can get their heads out of you know what, I will skip watching the next few Olympics they have the rights to. There's no point in following any of this if NBC gives us such a hassle with it.

Wow, this synergy tie-in at the end of the closing ceremonies sounds even more silly than that "3rd Rock From The Sun" "bit" at the conclusion of their coverage of Super Bowl XXXII in 1998 - this was right at the tail end of their previous NFL contract.
