NBC-Comcast Merger Gets Genachowski's Blessing

The WSJ has more info: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704278404576037502978983500.html

According to people close to the FCC negotiations, those conditions would require that Comcast make NBC Universal and its other Comcast-owned video content available to pay-TV competitors at reasonable, nondiscriminatory terms. He also wants to impose conditions that would require Comcast to offer NBC Universal programming to other online video providers.

Just what would he mean by "reasonable, nondiscriminatory terms"? This is actually worse than approving the deal without conditions. Perhaps the Cheapcast-NBC merger was the "problem" that the so-called net-neutrality "solution" was looking to "solve"? I don't see anything about NBC remaining a broadcaster but if Cheapcast gets the approval I don't see how they should be forced to continue operating NBC as an OTA concern. If they want to take NBC off the air after January, c'est la vie.

Of course, my preference is that the anti-trust review puts a kibosh on the entire deal. The only condition I see that might make sense is if Cheapcast has to sell off its cable systems, like Time Warner sold off Time Warner Cable (aka Toon Joker Cable in my area). Cable systems and entertainment companies ought to remain separate. I'm surprised that Time Warner got away with owning TWC for a long time.

Bloomberg also has its article: http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2010-...ay-for-completing-nbc-universal-takeover.html

Agreed that the entire deal should be rejected for anti-trust reasons. The idea that slapping some hard to enforce conditions on the sale will actually make much difference is just laughable -- the regulatory equivalent of lipstick on a pig.
