NBC Considers Cutting Back Programming Hours in Prime Time

There are no true 'reality' shows. 'Cops' used to be one genuine but nothing like it on the networks now.
There is "Wellington Paranormal" but that's scripted. I mention that because it's a lot like "Cops" with bizarre supernatural stuff. And the cops talk to the camera, so it's clear that it's a "documentary".

The term is “mockumentary”.

Love WP, especially the NZ locations.

I remember only the film crew following the cops around as they made traffic stops or collared the bad guys. After each 'story' one of the cops would narrate an explanation of cause and effect.

I got real tired of watching drunks and mental cases. I was never cut out to be a cop although I did serve as Shore Patrol in the Navy.

And if they do, it's available on Game Show Network - Sometimes with Steve Harvey, at other times with various former hosts and it's often shown in hours-long marathons. I know this because when visiting my folks, it's often all they watch. It's at those times in life that I'm especially thankful for my smartphone as a little 'Feud goes a long way IMO.
I haven't seen a non-Harvey 'Feud' on GSN in years. Buzzr airs Dawson, Combs, and (I think) Anderson Feud. Mostly what I see on Game Show Network IS Harvey 'Feud', several hour marathons' worth of it. That's when America Says or another one of their in-house shows isn't airing.

Not sure what they currently air as I avoid both GSN and 'Feud like the plague..But at one time they showed mostly Harvey's hosting, but some John O'Hurley (who supposedly declined to continue hosting when they decided to go more "blue" with the questions on the show and make it more adult-themed since it had been floundering for years under multiple hosts with relatively dismal ratings...That's when Harvey took over), and they also aired a few Richard Karn hosted episodes here and there.

Obviously Harvey's hosting is much more popular and his ratings are higher than the last several hosts...The show is also decidedly a bit more "racy" with a lot more innuendo and adult humor. I haven't seen a Louie Anderson-hosted episode, but back when Mad TV was still around, they did some pretty hilarious spoofs of Anderson hosting, usually realizing his career was over at the point he started hosting The Feud and wishing the Lord would take him out right then and there.

On "Wellington" the perps are usually possessed or aliens.

I only watch the celebrity version but before I discovered I could watch the Fox station's newscast live online, when I turned on the TV, I was always on Harvey's "Feud". I never did figure out how to change stations except for playing the recording. And a lot of the time the Fox station had signal problems and I couldn't always get the antenna to work, or I got tired of going to the trouble.

But yeah, the celebrity version is also naughty. I don't care for Harvey but he really does a good job of making smart remarks.

Game show network only airs Harvy version of Family Fued. As for ABC and CBS following suit if NBC cuts the last hour of primetime is probably a yes. When Today started on Saturdays, CBS and ABC followed suit years later with Fox dumping their cartoons for paid programming in the form of a 2 hour block called marketplace.

My guess would be before ABC and CBS fold the last hour they would air more reality or news type programming. ABC could possibly revive their old shows like Primetime Live or 20/20 Downtown or something different like 20/20 Mysteries since most of the news shows now 20/20, Dateline, and 48 hours is one full length story instead of 4-5 stories per episode like in the past.

Also they would probably air local news for an hour and a half to leave the late night shows in their regular time slots.

I think I quit watching news magazines when "Dateline" went to five nights a week. Did that really happen?

Here is more on if the proposed plans that NBC is talking about did happen. Then again NBC is responding to how to get more viewers to Peacock with it's shows and responding to their competitors spending money to have shows on streaming outlets.

The news that NBC is considering canning its 10 p.m. programming slot and handing it over to local stations may have farther-reaching implications beyond the 2023-24 season. Looking ahead, digital analyst and former ABC Daytime president Brian Frons sees that decision as a potential death knell for broadcast TV’s scripted drama programming.

“Maybe we wake up five years from now and NBC is only news and sports,” Frons told TheWrap. “If Disney+, Hulu, Netflix and Amazon are making bigger, better dramas for five times the money, maybe you shouldn’t be in the drama business.”

There is no point for the networks to spend all this money on scripted drama when they only have one revenue stream, and their rights to this drama are so limited. This has been a problem for a long time. The only difference is now the networks have other outlets within their control where they can run this scripted drams.

Best example is Paramount with Yellowstone and 1886. Back in the old days, this would have aired on CBS. Now that CBS and Paramount are owned by the same company, it makes more sense for it to be on Paramount.

If NBC (and eventually other networks( give up 10 pm maybe it makes sense to keep 10 pm Sundays because of football, other sports and awards shows.
