NBC EXECUTIVE: "PRIME TIME IS PAINFUL" AUDIENCE LOSSES AFFECTING TODAY / TONIGHT

NBC EXECUTIVE: "PRIME TIME IS PAINFUL" AUDIENCE LOSSES AFFECTING TODAY / TONIGHT

Do they even have a new show that is a hit this season?

18-49 viewers are down 11% this year vs. 2010.

NBC Universal put more money into new NBC shows, but it didn't pay off.

Even older pillars "The Office," "Law & Order," "Biggest Loser" are down significantly.

Sunday night football is carrying the network.

Has the peacock been plucked?

the producers of "America's Funniest Security Camera Videos" and their
ilk must be kicking into overdrive for January...

Re: NBC EXECUTIVE: "PRIME TIME IS PAINFUL" AUDIENCE LOSSES AFFECTING TODAY / TONIGHT

Is it too late to bring back Supertrain or Pink Lady?

Re: NBC EXECUTIVE: "PRIME TIME IS PAINFUL" AUDIENCE LOSSES AFFECTING TODAY / TONIGHT

Their surprise hit this year was The Voice, and it won't return until February.

Re: NBC EXECUTIVE: "PRIME TIME IS PAINFUL" AUDIENCE LOSSES AFFECTING TODAY / TONIGHT

I agree with MarcB. I've never bought the "lead-in" thing since virtually all TV's now have remotes and it is easy to punch up a new show. I am not a regular, or even occasional, viewer of Leno and never watch NBC except for the very rare college football game (when they are not showing the most over-exposed team in America). Maybe most people are not as selective as MarcB and me. ???

I don't get it. There isn't currently a show I watch on NBC Primetime, but yet I watch Leno every night. Their poor prime-time lineup doesn't affect my viewing habits.

You still watch NBC, though, so you have the possibility to be exposed to more promotions for other NBC shows. What about viewers who don't watch "Today" or "the Tonight Show", they don't care for sports so they don't tune in for "Sunday Night Football"- how do they know what is airing on NBC besides outside promotions like banner ads on websites, billboards, etc? They have an even smaller chance at being exposed to this advertising and promotion- and the snowball effect begins...

Re: NBC EXECUTIVE: "PRIME TIME IS PAINFUL" AUDIENCE LOSSES AFFECTING TODAY / TONIGHT

Meet the Press, Sunday Night Football, and occasionally Nightly News and Leno. Beyond those shows, NBC hasn't existed in my house for many years. CBS, ABC, and Fox don't fare any better - news and sports, and that's it. I watch MeTV and This-TV more than the Big Four combined. I'm also starting to use my Roku box and PC more and more for my viewing pleasure.

Those "promotions" do an excellent job of making sure that I don't watch those shows on NBC. ;D

Re: NBC EXECUTIVE: "PRIME TIME IS PAINFUL" AUDIENCE LOSSES AFFECTING TODAY / TONIGHT

The one thing ABC is good at is synergies. They find something that works, and they spread it across all platforms. So ESPN is now their sports brand, even on ABC. And they have a Disney movie night on ABC. They used to do Disney Saturday morning.

What NBC needs to do is look beyond its traditional system of buying prime time TV. That's old time programming. They have Universal Pictures. Maybe there's some synergies there. They have the various cable channels. Maybe there's something they can turn into a prime time show there. Obviously no one wants to cannibalize anything. And no one wants to be beholden to another division. They all want to create their own content. But in a big company, there has to be other way to do things, and clearly the current system isn't yielding enough results fast enough.

Re: NBC EXECUTIVE: "PRIME TIME IS PAINFUL" AUDIENCE LOSSES AFFECTING TODAY / TONIGHT

All of the New shows on NBC are duds, Up All Night, Whitney, etc. etc. etc., the only things I still watch on NBC is SVU, SNF, SNL, and Jay Leno, and even Community, The Office, and Parks are getting stale.

Hey, we have the new and improved Fear Factor to look forward to.

I was watching something forgettable on Versus a few days ago when the announcer exclaimed that as of January 2, 2012 (I think) Versus would henceforth be known as "NBC Sports <something or other>".

Perhaps the brand spreading has begun.

Hopefully it will be run by NBC sports and not Versus. Because that channel has been an afterthought since it started.

NBC Sports is also moving to Connecticut

Re: NBC EXECUTIVE: "PRIME TIME IS PAINFUL" AUDIENCE LOSSES AFFECTING TODAY / TONIGHT

NBC is bringing back Fear Factor so that might do well. I would think NBC has Universial so they should have no problem making a hit show. Take some ideas from USA Network and bring that to NBC.

Also you would think NBC should be doing somewhat better as they have Sunday Night Football to promote their shows during the week. Would it be better if they had Sunday afternoon football instead? NBC Sports has SNF, Golf, Horse Racing, NHL all where NBC has places to promote their shows.

Re: NBC EXECUTIVE: "PRIME TIME IS PAINFUL" AUDIENCE LOSSES AFFECTING TODAY / TONIGHT

But it's hardly much different from the late 70s on NBC, when Johnny Carson and Gary "Diff'rent Strokes" Coleman, together, were responsible for 35% of NBC's revenue.

The lead in theory does work for a few shows, I don't have TV since DTV but there are shows I want to watch, like "The Big Bang Theory." I'll take my laptop and go to the library.

And since I'm already there, I'll watch whatever comedy show CBS puts on after TBBT on Thursdays. But I wouldn't make a point to go to all the bother to watch something else.

Uh...seriously? You do have a remote control, I assume. It's not like the 1960s and 70s when you actually had to get up out of your recliner and walk five or six feet to turn a stiff rotary dial in order to change channels. Yes - TV viewers had to be real men, in those days.

How about Star Trek ?? It was an NBC show in the 1960s

They could pick up where Voyager left off in 2001.....

Thoughts?

Cheers :D

They had another great one in The Event but they kept trying to put it on the same night & time that 24 was on TOTALLY FORGETTING that it was Fox & their unwillingness to move the latter two seasons of 24 to either right after American Idol when it was moved from Monday Nights to Tuesday Night or to a night which they had a better chance of KEEPING THE AUDIENCE after the other networks adjusted their Monday Night schedules to match what Fox had that eventually killed 24 (Bad writing was also to blame too)

The momentum of 24 REALLY dropped when it was seperated from American Idol

If NBC had programmed The Voice & The Event (Respectfully) in back-to-back hours, they might've had a chance to recapture the magic Fox let go for some odd reason

JMO.....

Cheers & 73 :D

It will be known as NBC Sports but the talent & many of the shows & events will remain the same

Sorta like what CBS Sports Network is now (Except with the exception of the military academies, only the coveted SEC is seen on the mother network)

Cheers & 73 ;D
