NBC From Great to Awful

The Olympic coverage was wonderful on NBC. The hockey gold medal game play by play simply excellent. The coverage of the closing with Michaels and Costas superb. Then The Marriage Ref. It is painful to watch Jerry Seinfeld as a part of this horrible show. It is just mind numbing how terrible this much hyped show is. There was nothing close to being funny and poor Seinfeld did nothing but laugh. Have no idea what he was laughing at.

Not sure what to make of "The Marriage Ref". At first glance it reminds me a little of "Match Game '73", as most of the participants seem half in the bag. But, depending on who they can bring in as guests, it could have some life. Just not sure at this point.

At least the talking over parts at the closing ceremony was kept down. I didn't see the opening ceremony, but from what I've read that there was a lot of talking over at that ceremony.

That was odd how Marriage Ref was aired right after the first part of the closing ceremony. The second part of the closing ceremony was okay. Although, it did annoy me a little bit that during the Alanis Morissette performance they cut away and interviewed few of the athletes. I guess it was just bad timing during that part of the ceremony and not meant to be disrespectful to the performer.

Well, now I can go back to watching only local news and Leno. Anything else on NBC I have no interest in.

And NBC hopes the rest of the country does, as well! ;D

Like it or not, reality shows are still the coin of the realm, since they're cheaper to produce than scripted programs. I keep expecting reality show ratings to drop as people become saturated and bored with the entire genre, but it hasn't happened yet.

On the bright side, Parenthood (starts tomorrow night at 10:00) is getting very good reviews as a family drama/comedy. Produced by Ron Howard.

Understand "reality" shows are hot, however, after being a huge Seinfeld fan it is painful to see him reduced to this awful show. The concept possibly has merit, however, the couples and their scenarios were rehearsed, stiff, and stupid. On last night's show, oddly, only Alec Baldwin had some good lines. Jerry looked like a guy that comedy passed by. That is sad. He left TV on top. Too bad he has come back to fail.

I don't know Frank, there are a number of articles out which are critical of the way that NBC hurriedly and abruptly chopped the closing ceremonies in order to stuff their new joke of a reality show "The Marriage Ref" down America's throats. Here's a pretty critical article on the failed segue.

It sounds like they went from great to awful even before Jerry Seinfeld showed up.

NBC is too badly damaged, in my opinion, for it to recover. The Conan-Jay battle, prime-time, etc. really did a number on the network that it will probably never recover from. Not even the ghost of Brandon Tartikoff could save this mess.

We can all hope and pray that when the new Comcast guard takes over, Zucker and his minions will be shown the door.

I personally wouldn't have even considered watching the Marriage Ref. The only reality shows I'll watch are shows like Dirty Jobs and Myth Busters. I don't do shows that conjure up fake reality situations.

As for NBC being "too badly damaged to recover." History says otherwise. Granted, none of the big 3 networks have the power, influence or ratings of 30, 20, or even 10 years ago. But NBC could easily recover if it produces some good programming that people want to see.

Examples:

ABC was the perennial also ran network - ranking a distant third during the 50s and 60s - until Fred Silverman did magic there with programming in the early 70s - turning ABC into the number 1 network for a number of years.

During that same period, NBC dropped to third behind ABC and CBS, then dropped even further - ironically when Fred Silverman came over from ABC. He couldn't repeat his success, and almost ruined the franchise. But NBC recovered under Brandon Tartikoff and was number 1 for quite a few years.

The first few years for Fox were disasterous. All the shows in the ratings cellar were on Fox in the mid-late 80s, but look how far they've come.

You're right about Zucker and Co though, stdjsb25 - if Comcast truly wants NBC to recover as a broadcast network, they should be shown the door.

Costas and Michaels were real pros. They only spoke when there was a need and not once did they step on one another. They didn't get in the way of a wonderful moment. NBC would have done better staying with Olympic coverage or anything other than Marriage Ref. Seinfeld was to many of us a comedic hero. We could quote lines from the show and of course his catch phrases are now a part of everyday dialog. It was painful to watch a once brilliant peformer look so pitiful.

The coverage of the closing was awesome,I was pssst when they pulled this crap at 10:30 I just turn the channel and set the tivo for the rest of the closing after the bullcrap show was over.anyway It's to bad to see ,once a good network that the late Brandon Tartikoff made No#1 now getting trashed by these idiots.

NBC got a few minutes of my time for the Olympics; they really have nothing to offer the public on the air, whether it be television or radio affiliations. They know the right thing to do, and still they refuse and harden themselves. Just the way it is.

NBC had the chance to be awesome and chose instead to be mediocre.

The focus spent on Lindsay Vonn was embarrassing. They tried doing the same with the Canadian figure skater. They spent two hours in the afternoon covering such exhilarating 'sports' as biathlon, cross-country and curling and wasted more precious hours trying to cover several ski events through thick fog. And still more hours covering non-Olympic 'stories' (which may have been interesting but deserved their own time).

NBC: the Olympics are about sport. Not human interest. Not travelogue. Not breathless exploitation of selected athletes. SPORT! Cover it, dammit!

And you just recently realized this? :D

I meant, of course, that NBC could have reversed several years of declining quality and used the Olympics to showcase their programming and on-air talent. Alas, their coverage just showed they have no imagination or desire to rebuild their network. I feel very sad for the people arranging the deck chairs on this sinking ship.
