NBC Hasn't Needed To Use Their "Flex" Muscle For "SNF" This Year, Have They?

NBC Hasn't Needed To Use Their "Flex" Muscle For "SNF" This Year, Have They?

Maybe it's on a count of the teams that were scheduled in the second half of this year's "Sunday Night Football" schedule are all still playing well, but NBC has yet to "flex" another contest to replace one of their previously scheduled games this season. I believe this is the longest NBC has gone without "flexing" one of their "Sunday Night Football" games.

Coming up in Week 15, it's the Patriots (with the second-best record in the league) hosts the Packers, which is also very much in playoff contention themselves. However, if I were NBC, I would try and "flex" Fox's Eagles/Giants game scheduled for the same week. Or can they not do that since they've previously carried the Giants/Eagles game at the Linc earlier this season? Given that, I don't think Fox would allow it. Joe Buck alone would probably come down with a mysterious 120-hour flu if such a "flex" move were approved... though for Fox to get Patriots/Packers in return (Green Bay is the road team so it would be a Fox broadcast), I'd say it would be a fair trade.

FYI: Week 16 will be the Eagles and the out-of-playoff-contention (and most likely Brett Favre-less) Vikings, so I'm sure this game could be flexed out. And Week 17 will be an open date.

Is that right? I wonder why I didn't hear much about this flex option... Now that Favre (and the Vikings) are most likely out for the season, what are the odds that NBC might flex this game back? :D

I'd say very low odds they will flex it back, considering how well the Eagles prime time games have done this year in ratings. It's the Mike Vick effect. This will be the sixth prime time game for the Eagles, who appear to be the favorite to win the NFC East and make the playoffs. There's some interesting discussion about NBC and the Eagle's prime time games in general this year on one of the Eagles blogs. http://www.bleedinggreennation.com/2010/12/13/1873619/vikings-eagles-flexed-to-prime-time

The NFL however only has 12 days notice to move the game, so today (the 14th) would be the latest they could move it back...interesting that week 17 is completely open...there is a game that night, however NBC/NFL has left it open, no placeholder game, and the only difference with week 17 is they have up until 6 days before the game to flex a game there, not 12.

That'll be even more than the Jets - three of whose prime time games were Monday nighters on ESPN (which, by the way, they are 1-2 on the network this season)...

I believe the way Week 17 works is that NBC will choose the matchup with the most playoff implications with six days notice before the game, as opposed to the usual 12-14 days prior in previous weeks.

I were NBC I'd stay with the Patriots and Green Bay game. Could be another snowy football game like this past Sunday when Patriots played Bears in Chicago. Not that I am a Patriots fan, know a lot of people who are tho. Rather see them then the NY Football Giants. Its not like the Giants are going anywhere.

Except the playoffs.....

Cheers :D

Well they'd be in right now, on a tie-breaker over Green Bay, due to a better NFC conference record. This Miami fan will root for Green Bay on Sunday, knowing it'll be a futile effort at best. :(

Keep in mind that flexing is week 17 isn't so easy. Every game in the last week are division match ups. The AFC East sees Miami closing at New England while Buffalo closes at the New York Jets (both on CBS at 1 pm eastern).
