NBC in the hunt

NBC has announced that they are selling WNCN/Raleigh, WCMH/Columbus, WVTM/Birmingham, and WJAR/Providence. All stations are good to great performers for the network, but don't allow for much growth according to an NBC executive.

They will focus more on markets that provide growth for their duopoly template that have forged with the acquisition of the Telemundo network a couple of years ago.

What this means and what the NBC executive said is that NBC will go all out trying to acquire stations in markets where they have a Telemundo presence (Phoenix, Tucson, San Antonio for starters) and work on building duopolies to add to their empire.

Sure Gannett may not be interested in selling KPNX. Does anyone recall what happened to KRON???

Any thoughts?

I thought Gannett now had to sell either the Repulsive or KPNX. They've already dumped KMOH Kingman and are selling KNAZ Flagstaff. Could this be a precursor to NBC buying KPNX?

And which station would NBC buy if not KPNX (assuming they want to in fact buy one here)? Neither of the other commercial non-O&O VHFs (KTVK & KPHO) are for sale AFAIK, even though any property is for sale if the price is right.

But I think NBC learned from the 1994 New World/Fox/Scripps debacle even though they weren't directly involved except in Kansas City. I don't think they'll attempt to buy a station other than KPNX since that would kill the network in the ratings for a few years - until folks got used to NBC being on 3 or 5.

And, Tucson and San Antonio are too small for big-market-centric NBC to even bother with so I doubt if they go into either city. If they were interested in owning stations in mid-sized markets, they wouldn't be selling their Raleigh, Columbus, Birmingham, Hartford and Providence stations.

I'd be happy if Gannett sold KPNX to NBC if for no other reason than we would finally be rid of that uber-annoying partnership between 12 and the Republic.

I agree that NBC probably would not want to buy any other Phoenix stations. They know (or should) that one huge reason KPNX became the dominant station in town was because it was the only one of the network affiliates not to swap networks in 1994. Viewers didn't know which end was up for a few years, but good 'ol Channel 12 stayed the same. Before then, KPNX was a solid performer in local news ratings most years, but they often came in second to 10 and 3. Now they enjoy somewhat more success.

If NBC can pull it off, this makes good sense to position themselves in a rapidly growing Hispanic market like Phoenix. Acquiring KPNX and linking them with Telemundo would provide strong competition to Univision. As I mentioned in an earlier posting, expect to see a lot of changes in the Phoenix market in the next year or two. If not this deal then something else.

Let me preface this by telling I'm simply speculating.

IF NBC comes in and buys up KPNX (or any other station albeit, KPHO, KTVK...), could the purchase force the other Nets to reconsider any plans to place their respective O&O in the southwest?
So far, only FOX has the only O&O in the Valley. I've always believed that could force Tiffany, Peacock and Mouse to MAYBE look at the Phoenix market as a serious contender, demographics aside.

During the '80s, didn't CBS come in and make an offer on KPHO?
It ended up that Meredith wanted high while CBS offered low.
True?
