NBC launching competitor to Antenna, RTV, Me-TV

Re: NBC TO ROLLOUT COMPETITON TO ME-TV, ANTENNA, THIS TV

From Feder's Article

A working schedule, obtained Tuesday, kicks off mornings with Lassie, followed by Roy Rogers, The Lone Ranger, The Virginian, The Adventures of Kit Carson and Alias Smith and Jones. Middays feature Marcus Welby, M.D. and Highway to Heaven. Movies air in afternoons, followed by rotating comedies Burns & Allen, The Lucy Show, Ozzie & Harriet, Red Skelton and Groucho Marx. Prime time includes Charlie’s Angels, The Six Million Dollar Man, The Bionic Woman and Magnum P.I.

So anyone know what other shows are in the NBCUniverssal Library?

Re: NBC TO ROLLOUT COMPETITON TO ME-TV, ANTENNA, THIS TV

For now it'll mostly be in the markets with an NBC O&O station. WVIT-TV (NBC) channel 30 of New Britain/Hartford is an NBC O&O, but wasn't directly listed as carrying this channel at first. WVIT-TV 30-3 has largely been blank ever since Universal Sports went away on New Year's Eve as a terrestrial service.

In any case, there were so many good shows out in the 80's yet none of these retro networks seem to be going for them. They all lean way too old in my opinion, especially Me-Tv...too many black and white shows.

I think you're onto something here. Just from an potential advertising standpoint, wouldn't it make more sense to do a retro TV channel that's heavily skewed toward the 1980s, targeting viewers born from 1975-1992? I know there are far better platforms to reach audiences younger than 45, but a lot of these folks have 'cut the cord' too.

I can think of a whole list that are not currently airing:

Growing Pains
Diffrent Strokes
Silver Spoons
Punky Brewster
Perfect Strangers
MacGyver (only airs occasionally on Cloo)
Moonlighting
Webster
Charles in Charge
Empty Nest
L.A. Law
Love Boat
Fantasy Island
Incredible Hulk
Magnum PI
Night Court
Life Goes On
Gimme a Break

This is a good list. I'd add Knight Rider, Airwolf, The Fall Guy, ALF, Simon & Simon, Cagney & Lacey, Star Trek: The Next Generation, The Twilight Zone (the 1985-89 CBS version, and perhaps the 2002 UPN version also just for kicks).

Seriously, any late 70s-early 1990s show that was big enough to sell T-shirts, toys, and other 'collectables' should be looked at. Blatantly go for the nostalgia nerds!

Because I knew it would rattle you and perhaps you might be so over-the-top outraged that you would resign from this board and bother and annoy other people in a parallel universe.

I'm wondering if indeed NBC has thousands of original "Concentration" game show episodes in their vault.....if there was ever a time to release the tiger,..... :)

BTW is this to say that NonStop will stop?

I would love that... i'm surprised they never did a remake

If I had to guess which channel around here would get Cozi TV, I'd go with KWQC-- on account of being the Quad Cities' NBC station AND 'cuz it (to date) is the only QC TV station to NOT carry a classic network, as RTV used to air on WHBF 4.2 'til January, Antenna TV airs on WQAD 8.2, ME-TV on KLJB 18.3, and This Quad Cities on KGCW 26.2...

A few others that I remembered used to be in syndication: Head of the Class, California Dreams, Kate & Allie, It's A Living, Fame, Hogan Family, What's Happening. And of course, Gilligan's Island which used to air all the time. For dramas maybe Hunter also but a drama such as that, they may reserve for the Cloo network.

Clarrisa Explains it All? Game Shows like Wipeout not the new one but the old one where like if the Question was Cities not in Florida and on the List was Dallas,Tampa Bay,Miami,Canton,Lake Mary,Sanford,Altamonte Springs,Buffalo,Pubelo then Dallas,Canton,Buffalo and Pubelo the person would pick,Hollywood Squares,Major Dad,Sports Night and so on.

Old episodes of Leno, and Late Night (with Letterman and Conan) are rotting away in the vaults. So are episodes of SNL older than 15 years (they may be on DVD and HULU but lazy channel surfers won't buy those). How many old game shows do they own?
And Broadway Video also owns SNL. NBC can't just grab the tapes and play them, there's a lot of red tape to go through first.

During at least 1999-2001, NBC's classic SNL offerings included the Original Cast years (1975-80), as well as some late 80s/early 90s too.

And around that same time SCTV reruns aired on NBC late nights after Conan--which can be another Cozi late night idea.

When I think of 80's shows whose reruns are not currently airing, I think "Perfect Strangers" - but then, I also think it wasn't a good show, IMHO.

I'm sure if you surf basic cable, you'll find many of the popular sitcoms and shows from that decade scattered about.

I can think of a whole list that are not currently airing:

Growing Pains
Diffrent Strokes
Silver Spoons

I will add Small Wonder to your list. It hasn't been in reruns on TV anywhere in the U.S. since KTTV channel 11, the Fox O&O in L.A., dumped the show from its schedule at the end of the summer of 1996. KTTV was the last station in the country to air it. The show originally aired from 1985 to 1989.

If Fox were to launch a subchannel of this kind (started with its O&Os), they could add Small Wonder and other shows from the 20th Century Fox Television library (that hopefully haven't been destroyed) to that subchannel's lineup. As Joan Lawson, the mom on the show, would say in a singsong voice: "That makes sense!" Such a subchannel could be called "Fox Classics" or "RetroFox." (IMO, the latter name is more original than the former.) In L.A., it could go on channel 11.3, since 11.2 (really channel 13.4, on sister KCOP My13's digital signal) is already being used for an SD simulcast of KTTV HD on channel 11.1.

BTW, the first two seasons Small Wonder are on DVD courtesy of Shout! Factory. No word from them on when/if the last two seasons will ever see a DVD release.

Netflix has all of SNL's past seasons, so there is no doubt that they would be available to run on the new network if they wanted. I could possibly see doing the best of the 70's and 80's but not the entire series.

I saw the first promo for Cozi TV yesterday during a commercial break during the Today Show on WNBC. They basically highlighted all the programs that would air and then listed the channel number for all the NYC area cable systems that carry WNBC 4.2. The promo did not mention anything about the January 1 launch date and actually made it seem like Cozi was already on the air, but of course it is not.

The classic shows starts on Thursday at 5am starting with The Adventures Of Ozzie & Harriet.

Cozi is adding an affiliate outside of the NBC O&O group, they're bringing in Las Vegas' NBC station, KSNV starting on January 1st. On KSNV, it's replacing Untamed Sports, an outdoor sports network; the same station already carries Antenna TV on its 3.3 (they added Antenna when Universal Sports went cable-only almost a year ago).

Watching the video on the Cozi TV site, it appears they're preserving the NonStop programming to air on weekends. Talk Stoop and First Look appear to be among the survivors. (On hindsight, it's almost as though they were using a weekend's worth of programming to fill a week's worth of time, so this probably isn't such a bad move.)

Also, I wonder if they're planning on going with 16x9 format, even for the classic programming? The teaser video makes it look that way.

Do you mean that Ozzie & Harriet will be in Stretch-o-Vision?

Was looking at zap2it's guide (WTVJ here in Miami has Cozi).....they have a Burns & Allen episode that Antenna TV ran. I was kinda thinking that maybe only the live 1950-52 shows would be shown on Cozi. Are they sharing the rights with Antenna TV, as far as having the filmed episodes?

cd

Agreed. It seems This TV has reduced the number of black and white TV shows it runs. I don't see Sea Hunt, Bat Masterson or Highway Patrol listed these days. They had been frequently seen when This TV first signed on in NYC.

Now it's just a couple of youth-oriented black and white comedies: Patty Duke and Mister Ed, and only on weekdays. On weekends, it seems the only classic TV show they run is Green Acres. The rest is all movies.

ME doesn't like that.
