NBC lays down the hammer regarding Tonight Show appearences..........

Letterman sort of addressed this the last time Brian Williams was his guest. He asked Brian point blank if this was his last time as a guest, now that Fallon was moving to 11:35. Brian ignored the question. The deal has always been for first appearance. Letterman had a requirement that the first appearance was on his show. Then guests were free to do Fallon or any other NYC show.

Why is this a problem?

Because if you had a major publicity event, say a new movie you were starring in, you'd want to promote it as many places as possible. NBC is saying you can only do it with them, and no one else. If you go elsewhere first, then you can't be on NBC.

I understand that, but it's a consequence of choosing to accept a paycheck from NBC, a term of doing so if you will. I don't doubt that the other networks may have communicated this as well, it just isn't as public as this decree by NBC. I do believe they can promote elsewhere if they do so first on NBC or if NBC declines to have them on The Tonight Show, so again, I see no problem.
