NBC News on the live West Wing debate - not good!

On tonight's live debate episode of The West Wing there were two bugs on the episode - one a NBC peacock bug with the word "LIVE" under it, and the next one was a bit disturbing - it was a "Live NBC News" bug. Also a real journalist, Forrest Sawyer, was used as the moderator for the fictional debate.
The "LIVE" bug:

An added touch of realism, at least in New York, was a WNBC weather crawl:

Sure using NBC News makes sense in the context of a drama and I am sure most people with half a brain would know its fiction, but it is still pushing the limits a bit.

I take it that the crawl was seen only on WNBC, right?

WNYT and several other NBC affils ran their OWN crawls due to the line of storms that came through the northeast.

I saw that during my shift tonight and still cannot believe that NBC allowed them to brand as "NBC News".

A similar one on WCAU-TV, since the area affected is in both markets.

I was flipping channels and ran across it. When I saw the "NBC News LIVE" logo, I thought "what the f...." but soon figured out it wasn't anything real when I saw Jimmy Smits and Alan Alda I realized what the deal was.

I think this is a real good way for NBC News to lose a little credibility. Why not use the MSNBC logo instead, since most people will be reasonably sure that the channel they are watching is not, in fact MSNBC.

My power to block out things that annoy continues to amaze me. I watched the entire episode, never even SAW the bugs there -- I just don't pay attention to them anymore, I guess!

But, yes, I did see the WNBC weather crawl. And about 10 minutes later, the house shook ;)

WOW, TALK ABOUT MISSING THE POINT, PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!

I thought for sure everyone was going to rant about how great and creative this show was. Instead, I see nerly 2 dozen messages complaining about "the nerve of them using an NBC News logo."

C'mon people! This is TV. You think that the real debates are any more real? Here's a reality check for you; Politics is scripted! It's all about making noise. Politics has NOTHING to do with policy.

Here, The West Wing came up with something that felt real, and in some ways, it was a better debate of some REAL issues. The two characters represented their sides (Left and Right) well. And lets face it, our real president is not much more than a figure head. So how fake was it? Think about it!

If that episode goes to syndication or cable they(Warner Brothers) will probably block the NBC logo from the screen.

But in a way it was a good show, especially the part about [Liberal Republican]Abe Lincoln and the Democrats resposible for the advancing of civil rights in America. That one at least they got right.

That's what I would've thought, considering that such a crawl didn't air on WDIV. Plus it would be confusing to viewers in markets that have other NBC affiliates on channel 4, such as WDIV or KNBC.
______________

If I were a high-level executive of NBC, I would not have allowed an "NBC News" bug to have appeared on the "West Wing" debate episode.

Instead, I would have run the usual NBC entertainment program bug, and suggest the producers make a bug in the lower-left corner with the name of a fictional network. In the show, Forrest Sawyer (who played himself) would have identified himself as working for this "network".

On the other hand, didn't Bill O'Reilly play himself, moderating a political debate, in an episode of "24" a season or two ago??

Well Mr. O'Reilly is not a journalist and his program airs on an entertainment network. (What else would you call FNC?) So it wouldn't be a problem in that case.
______________

FOX isn't about news anyway, it's about pure entertainment. I saw "The Corporation" recently and they had a long piece about Tampa Bay's WTVT 13, owned by FOX. FOX executives told them that they couldn't broadcast truthful news, the news they broadcast had to be what FOX told them it would be. All about entertainment, not the real news.

If I lived in Tampa Bay, FOX 13 would be my LAST choice for news, even if this took place back in 1997 or so. Steve Wilson and Jane Akre are my heroes...and kudos to WXYZ for bringing Wilson on board. You deserve your #1 position in Detroit.

No, that wasn't Bill O'Reilly, or even a look-alike. That was someone else, AFAIK, not associated with the news entertainment industry.
