NBC Nightly News, 8-31-10

On KPNX/Phoenix, NBC Nightly News airs at 5:30pm. This evening, due to the Presidential speech, a special version customized for the West Coast is airing on the station (as announced by Brian Williams at to the start of the program).

The recap of the speech was obviously new material not seen on the original Eastern/Central airing. But is the entire newscast live? I would imagine that many/most of the segments are from the original airing (i.e. the story that just aired about bed bugs).

Can anyone confirm?

The telecast answered my question. At the end, Brian Williams announced that the speech would be airing at 8pm Eastern...

That's a kick, Brian reminds West Coast viewers to watch the speech later that night -- which they just recapped at the start of the program.

Apparently, Brian didn't stay long enough to end the program, nor did he tape a closing segment for the West.

It seems that NBC is going into dire straits more and more.

You'll see a "Western Edition" lower-screen banner right after the open
when there is some or all new material on the 5:30/6/6:30 PM PT feeds,
as tonight. KPNX Mesa is savvy enough to take the 5:30 PT feed during
the DST months.

At the end of the updated CBS 'cast tonight (aired by KPHO-TV Phoenix
at 6 PT), Katie's sub Harry Smith mentioned that viewers had just been
watching a special left coast broadcast. Bill Plante did the Obama speech
recap near the top of the show (I don't recall if it was the lead).

BTW, no left coast update tonight (09/01), at least as seen in Phoenix on
the NBC and ABC affils at 5:30 PT, even with the two "developing news"
items of Hurricane Earl and the Discovery Channel gunman.

It was obviously just after 6:30 ET--not 8:30--during the live shots from
the Outer Banks on the Hurricane Earl lead.

But don't worry,,,the all-important "Today" did an updated Left Coast edition this morning. The only updates seemed to be to the Hurricane Earl story. Later, they switched back to the "Live EDT" banners.

I think it was just an opportunity for an extremely disheveled Ann Curry to announce that "it's 7 o'clock Pacific Time". :D Will someone please comb Ann's hair in the morning???

The only thing worse than a three hour old morning yakfest is the four hour old
repeat of Wake Up With Crap on the (alleged) Weather Channel, however today's
7 AM PT airing--at least the Outer Banks location shots with Al and Stephanie--
did seem to be live, based on the position of the sun. And I will give them props
for dumping the midday (PT) long-form stuff and sticking with Earl.

After all, why watch a three-hour old national yakfest when we have our own local version on 3 and 10 here in Phoenix? I waiting for 3 or 10 to start at 4am so they can have a 6 hour long snoozecast!

On Friday's morning yakfests, CBS was "live PDT" for the first ten minutes
in the 7 AM PT hour, with NBC live until 7:15, due to Earl and several other
stories. OTOH, ABC was "live EDT" ::) with a three hour old standup from
the Outer Banks.

Related question for those in the Mountain Time Zone: do you get these
live updates of the network morning shows (when done for the left coast)
at the top of the 8 AM MT hour, or is it always the two hour old second
hour? Assuming the structure of the second hour is different, I'd guess
the always-forgotten Mountain zone is...as usual, forgotten.

Hey, oldiesfan, I've noticed in the winter that Phoenix gets the two-hour version of the Today show. I can only recall once when some huge breaking news event (can't remember what) caused "Today" to update stories for the Mountain time zone and, iirc, it was the 8 o'clock hour (not the 7 o'clock hour).

Today, in particular, has three hours of live ET programming from their main studio. It makes it difficult to update for Mountain time zone, since they are still broadcasting the third hour of Today. (I believe that the fourth hour of Today -- the Hoda and Kathie Lee show -- is broadcast from a different studio.)
