NBC Nightly News - July 5

Yeah.....with the umpteenth rehash of the oil spill. No new news, just more emotion.

I think sometimes we think that national media is different from any other workplace. By that, I mean that there could have been an agreement between talent and management that Williams would work this holiday in exchange for another day off somewhere else. I don't read much into it at all.

My guess is that ENbeeSEE figured out that Monday was a big holiday for a lot of people who would be home at dinner time watching the news so they wanted their first stringers on camera.

Too bad the content didn't match the presentation......again.

What a waste of 30 minutes.

And...what's the question about?

Thank you, Lar. Oh sorry, I thought you said "What's the question?" ;)

It's about Brian always seems to get the major holidays off (Memorial Day/4th of July/
Labor Day/Thanksgiving/Christmas/New Year's). Diane and Katie both had today off.

When you reach the stature of lead network news anchor, one might expect getting
major holidays off would be written into your contract.

I'm not begrudging any of them having the day off--more power to them if they do,
what with at least some local TV news talent (and production/engineering/news staff)
generally working on holidays.

Last night - on July 4 - Bill Cunningham did his radio show because he loves his country.

No big deal. There are holidays that folks enjoy enough to want time off, and there are other days they're willing to be flexible on. Most people would might opt for work on MLK Day, Presidents Day, or even Independence Day, but wouldn't dare mess with Christmas or Thanksgiving traditions.

July 5 is a major holiday?

In 2010, yes.

It was the federal holiday for Independence Day, since July 4 fell on a Sunday.

If it had been on Saturday, the holiday would have rolled back to Friday, as it
did in 2009. Same M.O. for holidays that are date-specific (Veterans Day,
Christmas, New Year's) rather than day-of-week specific (Thanksgiving and
the various Monday holidays).

Geez, you don't want to cheat a federal bureaucrat (or a politician) out of
a day off, do you? ;D

Williams takes Fridays off frequently during the summer, I would imagine that working other days is a part of that, or he takes five Fridays instead of a regular week of vacation, which is what a lot of people in my local market do on both radio and TV.

Because we all know smart people can never, ever make a simple mistake on something about something rather unimportant in the grand scheme of things.
