NBC not airing 2022 Golden Globes.

NBCUniversal released the following statement Monday: “We continue to believe that the HFPA is committed to meaningful reform. However, change of this magnitude takes time and work, and we feel strongly that the HFPA needs time to do it right. As such, NBC will not air the 2022 Golden Globes. Assuming the organization executes on its plan, we are hopeful we will be in a position to air the show in January 2023.”

The big problem here is the major film studios don't want to take part. Makes for a weak TV show if no stars participate.

Interesting situation, when the sponsoring organization is primarily European. A few months ago, the LA Times wrote an article asking why none of the members were black. Looking at the membership requirements, race was not mentioned.

It's a different kind of show and I really don't care how they run it as long as there's no bribery or financial impropriety. The HFPA is a for profit operation they aren't doing this for charity. But apparently NBC doesn't really know what's going on and how much money is being made. Do these "Press" individuals have the right to get rich off a TV broadcast?

Are you sure about that? Here's their FAQ:

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) is a non-profit organization of journalists and photographers who report on the entertainment industry activity and interests in the United States for media (newspaper, magazine and book publication, television and radio broadcasting) predominantly outside the U.S.

My understanding is the TV show is a benefit for the organization. Just as the CMA, Grammy, and Oscars.

Since the awards is currently scheduled for Jan. 9, 2022, which will actually be the final night of the 2021 NFL season, will NBC be able to schedule a final night of Sunday Night Football in place of the Golden Globes? Particularly one with MAJOR playoff/division clinching implications on the final night of the regular season?

I imagine the number of games is set, and the schedule comes out tomorrow. They would have to flex some games.

Tom Cruise returns his Golden Globes in protest apparently allegations of diversity issues. Note I don't know if Tom Cruise really means what he is doing or a gesture to hold on to attention for now.

Also some of the protests are on gender and racial issues at the organizers of the Golden Globes.

Could it be possible that NBC was forced into a decision between the NFL and the Golden Globes? If the Golden Globes refused to reschedule that NBC went with the NFL instead?

i doubt the NFL factored into the decision and that this was related to the racism scandal that the HFPA is dealing with right now.

With the number of people streaming, I bet the Golden Globes goes OTT only, via YouTube TV, or Amazon.

Except (as the OP says) Netflix and Amazon are boycotting the GGs. As I said earlier, it's hard to do a movie awards show when the movie companies are boycotting your organization. Actors are returning their awards. That's not the kind of thing Google is going to want to be a part of.

Warner Brothers too.

It's official--there will be Sunday Night Football in Week 18:

If memory serves correctly, the ratings for most of these types of awards shows have fallen off recently, anyway. Several weeks ago the Latin American Music Awards, which is the Spanish language rendition of the American Music Awards, aired on Telemundo. In that case they only presented a few actual awards during that program, and for the most part the whole broadcast was more or less packed with performances and was intended to be more entertainment than a proper "awards show".
