NBC once again #1

Well it's about time! It was nice to see Sunday's game get such a good rating. Did the Emmy Awards even make an impact on CBS?

Overall the #s for the Emmys were better than recent years, but some could attribute the higher ratings to CBS having the NFL doubleheader that weekend.

Perhaps, but Doogie is probably the real reason.

As for Leno, the start of this week was poor. Time will tell.

Although ratings for Jay Leno are leveling off...

Leveling off? Leno drew half the audience of Biggest Loser (which, come to think of it could be the title of both shows). Leno's show was #3 in all demo's.

But isn't NBC saving a ton of money with Leno's show compared to anything else that was produced in the 10pm hour last season?

Absolutely. I saw a report that a 1.5 rating will end up bringing in $300 million to NBC. Not a bad return on investment.

NBC will like the cost savings, but its affiliates won't (lower ad rates).

I'm just going out on a limb this time and guessing that Leno will once again helm Tonight starting in January and Conan will find a new career either on cable or in movies. As bad as his show is, Jimmy Fallon will stay put just because Conan will not want to go back to the 12:35 (11:35) time slot.

NBC has the Winter Olympics in February 2010, so Jay is definitely locked in until then.

Yes, it's possible a few affiliates will probably opt to start their news at 10PM instead of 11PM, pushing Jay to 1035PM (or likely 11PM so they can show an hour of fluffy info-tainment semi-news-y drivel).  NBC will threaten at first, but likely cave-in to a few powerful affiliates, granting them waivers. As long as the station shows 3.5 hours of the Tonight Show (Jay-Conan-Jimmy-Daly), NBC won't care. Just like they don't care when an NBC affiliate shows the four hours of Today.

Jay @10PM (9PM CT) is here to stay for most of the nation.  There isn't a single NBC show that could perform better in that timeslot 52 weeks of the year.

I don't think it'll happen until at least this time next year.....NBC, from what I recall, has at least a one year committment for the Leno Show in Primetime.

I doubt that Conan will loose the Tonight Show. The NBC exces think Conan is doing a fine job. Plus The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien is beating David Letterman in the key 18 to 49 demo group. That is a group that NBC can't afford to loose. Monday's Leno Show did poorly. It is more likely to drop Leno before Conan. Conan is aimed at a younger demo. A demo that have money. The older Jay Leno veiwers does not.

"Conan is aimed at a younger demo. A demo that have money. The older Jay Leno veiwers (sp) does not." Trust me. We have money. Lots of money. Money that the advertisers do want to go after, but believe me, we have money.

The thing is, NBC needs a lot more than Jay to be back where they once were. The Biggest Loser and America's Got Talent aren't viable in the medium and long term. Law & Order is too "been there, done that." They need a couple of good dramas and a break-out comedy or two. There's a reason why they consternated over whether to renew Chuck.

I'm under the impression that NBC wouldn't have decided to run Leno every weeknight at 10:00 if they thought they could "get back where they once were." I think they've thrown in the towel on that, and know realistically that they'll be the number 3 network in that time-slot. But they've done the math, and believe they can make money since the show is so cheap to produce relative to one hour dramas. Plus - if they'd let Leno go, he would be over at ABC competing against the Tonight Show in late nights.

When all you've got is lemons, make lemonade...

Monday night for Jay Leno drew 1.8 million viewers while Conan drew 2.44 million viewers. I doubt that NBC would drop Conan and put Jay Leno back at his old time slot.

There are of course exceptions to the rule. In general, though, advertisers (as well as marketers, in general) see the correlation between age groups and sales the way that willcail suggested.

American's Got Talent was the only original "summer season" series that got ratings. Plus when The Office started its season five last week it beats Survivior in the ratings. It will take time for NBC to come back. It won't happen overnight.

The Office isn't up against Survivor....CSI I believe. I don't share your optimism for NBC...they seem to be cutting back too much and going backwards, and are now losing late nights for the first time in ages. CBS and ABC are poised to take this one. So far, the scorecard on tvbythenumbers puts NBC 4th 18-49 this season.
