Each of those had FMs as well (WEAF-FM/WRCA-FM/WNBC-FM/WNWS/WYNY 97.1, WMAQ-FM/WNIS/WKQX 101.1, KPO-FM/KNBC-FM/KNBR-FM/KYUU 99.7, WRC-FM/WKYS 93.9), and there was also WJIB 96.9 Boston, in later years. From 1956-1965, NBC also owned WRCV 1060 Philadelphia, and for a while in the 50s and 60s, NBC owned WJAS 1320/99.7 in Pittsburgh, too.

After the 1955 NBC and Westinghouse switcheroo between Philly and Cleveland was reversed (1965), 1100/105.7/Ch. 3 became NBC-owned WKYC AM/FM/TV in Cleveland. They sold the AM/FM combo in 1972; the TV was sold sometime in the late 80s.

WJAS was sold by NBC around 1972 as well to Heftel (and became Buzz Bennett consulted 13Q).

They owned WENR 870/890 Chicago in those days, not WLS. WENR & WLS weren't combined until the late '50s, when ABC bought out WLS owner Prairie Farmer Magazine. Prairie Farmer had owned WLS since the late 1920's, buying it from Sears. I believe both stations carried NBC Blue/ABC programming even before the buyout, though.

ABC's FM & TV stations in Chicago were originally WENR-FM & WENR-TV. After ABC purchased Prairie Farmer, they dropped WENR from the AM but kept it on the FM (dropping the -FM suffix, IIRC) for a few more years.

WENR-TV was gone in 1953, after the ABC/United Paramount Theatres merger, taking UPT's WBKB call letters.

It was even more complex than that - ABC kept the WBKB studio facilities at 190 N. State Street (still the home of ABC Chicago today), but sold the WBKB-TV 4 license to CBS, which turned it into WBBM-TV and moved it to channel 2 (thus freeing channel 4 for use by WTMJ-TV Milwaukee, which wanted off channel 3 because of severe interference to/from WKZO-TV across the lake in Kalamazoo). And the Balaban & Katz (UPT) FM station on 96.3 went to CBS as well. CBS turned off the existing WBBM-FM on 97.1 and moved it to 96.3.

And what did you do with an extra FM license in the (then) second-largest market at the time? Put it in an envelope and return it to the FCC for cancellation. Hey, it's only FM...it's not worth anything!

I'd forgotten about the FM swap. I think the call letters of B&K's 96.3 was WBIF or something similar.

And, to make that ABC/UPT/CBS swap even more confusing, when WBBM-TV moved from Channel 4 to 2, they knocked Zenith's experimental pay-TV station KS2XBS off the air. After a lot of screaming and hollering, Zenith then donated those facilities to the founders of WTTW Channel 11, which went on the air in 1955.

What a mess that had to be!

Apparently there was a gap between WBBM-FM moving to 96.3 and the startup of WNIB (now WDRV) on 97.1.

NBC bought WENR in 1931 and entered an affiliation agreement with WLS at the same time. At the time, they had affiliation agreements with WIBO 560, WGN 720, WCFL 970, & KYW 1020. Two of those stations would soon disappear from the Chicago airwaves.

WIBO, along with WPCC who shared 560 in Chicago, had its license yanked in 1933 to make way for WJKS Gary IN, now WIND, which had been on 1360. KYW moved to Philly in 1934.

NBC bought WMAQ 670 from the Chicago Daily News later in 1931.

Along with WMAQ came experimental mechanical TV station W9XAP, which they took off the air in 1933. It was NBC's 2nd TV station in Chicago. They had received W9XR in the WENR purchase, which they shut down soon thereafter. NBC had no use for mechanical TV by that time.
