NBC San Diego's new identity

I just came to realize that San Diego's NBC-Universal-Comcast owned O-and-O is no longer identifying itself by its UHF frequency channel 39, but by its local cable TV channel 7.

They now calling themselves NBC 7.

What makes it even more crazy is that they are still mapping the station over-the-air as channel 39.

Kind of a head scratcher, no?

They are required by the ATSC standard (which is incorporated by reference in the FCC regulations) to map OTA as channel 39.

Violations are not unheardof, although I don't think a larger station like this would be doing that.

i suppose they could ask for a waiver. I'm not certain ABC would go along, as this station's OTA coverage overlaps with that of KABC. Remapping NBC-SD to channel 7 would result in some viewers receiving two channel 7's.

Did NBC remember the incident with KNTV in 2002 when KNTV called itself NBC3 and KCRA 3 objected because in places like Solano county they get KNTV 11 and KCRA 3. calling it NBC7 San Diego is very questionable. NBC keep your OTA's for FCC purposes like NBC11 Bay Area and NBC 39 San Diego so there will be less confusion with your OTA audience and your Directv Audience.

Didn't they used to ID as "7/39"? It seems to me that makes the most sense. That's typical in the Bay Area, with KBCW "44, Cable 12" (they even have a jingle, now) and KOFY "TV20, Cable 13."

All of their live trucks say now NBC San Diego 7. They are cable channel 7 on Cox, SW (Time Warner), etc. On DirecTV they are channel 39 as is their over-the-air channel.

Seeing that they started as KCST 7/39, then they became KNSD 7/39, then they were News San Diego 7/39, San Diego NBC 7/39, and now just San Diego NBC 7. One would think they would stay with some kind of identification seeing that Cox Cable and Time Warner are losing subscribers in droves because of the bad economy and that those viewers who haven't ditched their television altogether are now using rabbit ears and getting them over-the-air as channel 39 (and their useless digital subchannel 39.2 (California Non Stop) and 39.3 Universal Sports (which is going bye-bye and be a cable only premium sports channel.

So confusing....

No UHF station in San Diego uses their OTA channel in their branding.

KSWB 69- "FOX 5 San Diego"
KUSI 51- "KUSI News"
XDTV 49- "My TV 13"
KPBS 15- "KPBS San Diego"

NBC 7/39 was more confusing because people thought it was saying NBC seven hundred thirty nine. Especially with the old logo where the backslash was not there (it was the 7 acting as a slash).

In San Diego more people use cable than antennas and satellites combined. ABC 7 doesn't cover any of San Diego county OTA so that's irrelevant.
