NBC spinning the hits on Nightly News

I was just watching NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams, when I heard the Spin Doctors' hit "Two Princes" as bumper music into a commercial break. When did this start, and why? Presumably a way to get thirtysomethings interested in broadcast TV news?

Did it happen to accompany video of William and Harry together? They held a joint news conference this morning.

Hmm...perhaps. Maybe I wasn't paying close-enough attention! :p

On a related note..do local TV stations still have this no-no in reguards to their anchors and tattoos as far as their tats being seen on camera? Of course if that was ever the case.

Last weekend I was watching the news from NBC 25 WHAG out of Hagerstown, MD. I noticed that when one of their reporters was doing a story, well he was pretty inked up with big black tattoos up and down his arms. Kinda hard not to notice since he was wearing a short sleeve shirt. Now whether or not WHAG was trying to "be hip" since tattoos are very popular among the young now or being such a small station they really couldn't care less about tattoos, either way I am not sure.

Having watched WHAG earlier this year while vacationing in WV, I can't say anything about that station surprises me. The woman who anchored the 11 PM cast one evening back in February was ignoring the phone calls from 1985 requesting her hair and shoulder pads back.

You can't easily erase tattoos. Most businesses (not just TV news) require tattoos to be covered. Probably one of those instances where the reporter did not have access to a long-sleeve shirt at the time...and the report still had to be filed.

As for pop music during the news...CNN does this daily (particularly during "American Morning"), and so does MSNBC during their talk programs. Some local stations play pop music during their AM shows. Nothing wrong with that...a break from the same news music that some stations have been playing for years straight (11 for WSB-TV/Atlanta, and almost 40 for WPVI/Philadelphia). Although you do have to be careful...playing Elton John's "The Bitch Is Back" while rolling video of a woman would land someone in hot water very quickly.

I would not worry until I saw bottles of beer on the anchor desk. Then I might become concerned about an embarassing YouTube moment.

I heard some up-tempo classic hits kind of music on a national news program the other day too, so I don't think it's limited to just the Princes story.
It might have been during "Today" or some morning news-department-related show, though, not just the evening news, but it still struck me as weird or different. I thought my kid had flipped on the radio for a second or so, then they went to commercial and it was gone.

I agree - and that's one of my fave Elton ditties. Although whether the viewer would be offended would surely depend on the viewer's politics.

I am pretty sure it was Charlie Sheen who once said that when it comes to Hollywood movie making..they can turn a man into a monster right before your eyes..but for some reason they can NOT hide a tattoo.
