NBC Sports Network Rebranding as NBCSN

I guess someone in charge of the NBC Sports Network wants its audiences to know it the same way many folks know the Entertainment and Sports Programming Network (ESPN). Personally I would rather call these programming services by their full names.
 
This "transformation" has been ongoing for some time now, starting in fits and spurts, then the ticker logo began to "morph," and recently the mike flags were changed over to the now-preferred ID.

Sorry, but acronyms are standard in the United States, and everybody knows what they mean. Besides, the Eastern Seaboard Partisans Network has been legally called ESPN, Inc. for years. In fact, I believe the full names of CBS, NBC, and ABC have been dropped as well.

Let me give this a "+1" especially for those of you on here who aspire to be journalists. Acronyms are indeed standard and may be used as early as first reference, according to the Associated Press Stylebook.
 
The original name change was a mistake as it invited comparisons to and legitimized the sucky CBS Sports Network. Apparently they wanted listings services to list them as "NBCSP", in hopes people would call them "NBC Sports" for short, but they all went with NBCSN. Had they realized Keith's point they would have gone with another name. Maybe they would have stuck with Versus which sort of fits with channels like Sleuth and Chiller or whichever one of those is Cloo these days.

Actually it was the current NHL rights deal that precipitated the name change. The league wanted to have NBCSN and NBC related brand-wise.
 
Our original poster (and some others) may want to use full names in regards to identifying networks (or brands in general), but I don't see there being a problem using acronyms or abbreviations...it's just the way today's society is. Some sources may still end up using both "NBCSN" and "NBC Sports Network" interchangeably even after the changeover officially takes place.

It couldn't be any worse compared to other networks with head-scratching names, such as SyFy, Cloo, or FXX.

Sleuth became Cloo. Either way, on dish Network it's now "Extinct."
 
Comcast owns NBC. Comcast already has Comcast SportNet (CSN)

Take the letters NBC and CSN squeeze them together you get NBCSN!

In the Denver area, we call this channel the DO NOT GET (Even Though It's Owned By Comcast & Comcast Is The Only Cable Outlet In Town) NETWORK!!! Weird ::)

NBCSN is the national cable home to the National Hockey League, and yet, Denver is home to the Colorado Avalanche, an NHL team that has a huge fan following (not only in Denver, but probably throughout the Rocky Mountain region as well). I suspect there are several Avalanche games each year that are exclusive to NBCSN and not available for local telecast.
 
NBCSN is available on Comcast Xfinity's Denver system--channels 73 (SD) and 689 (HD)
 
Yeah, Pat was talking about Cloo, not NBCSN... on the other hand, I don't think the Avs are on NBCSN that often, given NBC's general obsession with a short list of teams and the Avs not doing well as of late...

That's true...you rarely see NBC/NBCSN NHL games televised west of Chicago on their schedules unless it's the Kings or Sharks (only maybe because the latter is a Comcast Sportsnet team).

The Avalanche had five NBCSN games last year. That's more than the Coyotes, who appeared in the Western Conference Final and had just one or two.

Rangers, Bruins, Flyers, Penguins, Black Hawks, & Red Wings - the four American members of the Original Six plus the two Pennsylvania teams.
