NBC Sports Radio

1090AM has flipped from ESPN to NBC Sports Radio as of July 12th. Paves the way for ESPN to affiliate with 105.1 (Greater Media) in a rumored flip.

And, yet, the latest data show that "Spoken Word" formats are taking a bit of a beating. Sports included.

Well, I have to believe that Greater Media must have data to back up their decision to do this. There are four other Sports stations in the market. Unless they'll be inking a deal to carry a Pro Team in Detroit, it's hard to imagine them impacting 'The Ticket' a great deal.

Crain's, MLive and the Freep all have stories indicating it'll happen next month.

You're far more attuned to the industry than am I, but a lot sure seems to be falling into place for this to not happen.

Pay the 'Spot' a visit now and then. We miss you.

If 105.1 does flip, it will be their mistake. Take a good long look at ESPN: they talk a TON of football, and not usually anything about the Lions; they don't talk baseball much until the All Star game, and then it's usually to blow smoke about the Yankees; they talk lots of basketball, but if the Pistons continue to suck, it'll be all Lakers and Heat; and they seldom if ever talk about hockey, so you can forget any possible Red Wings talk. End result? Lots of blather and none of it about any Detroit teams. PASS. I'd rather listen to Magic 105.1.

"The Spot"?

It doesn't matter to me, either way. I think that it will be interesting to see this play out. I hope that you guys are correct. I spend a bit of time with some of the sports broadcasters/writers in Detroit. Most of them are great people.

I'd love to see another full power Christian formatted FM in Detroit to give the other guys a run for their money...

I'd love to see anoither Christian full power too, but I'm grateful to have WMUZ and the K-Love repeater such that I get decent signals from both.

If 105.1 does flip, it will be their mistake.

I'm inclined to agree, to a point and only because the Sports format is so crowded in Detroit. The only way to really make it is to get the rights to broadcast one of the local teams. Will GM pay the bucks to do this? Maybe, the Lions rights could be up for grabs, but the other teams are locked up for awhile.

Mike & Mike and Cowherd on a good signal will attract a lot of sports fans. Fans of Drew Lane are likely to flock to the afternoon show, but it will cannibalize some WRIF and WCSX listeners.

The BIGGEST winner in all of this......WNIC. They will again have the AC market to themselves and likely be the only station to be all Christmas unless WOMC changes its practice.

Five sports stations in the market is excessive to me, although 1090 is really a fringe signal in most of the area.
