NBC stumbles ahead

With news that the network ordered five more scripts of Chuck (which, in my opinion, will NEVER be a mainstream hit) and cancelling Trauma at the same time, I have no doubt that this network has no sense of direction.

Is there anything that can save the peacock now?

They cancelled Trauma because it was set in San Francisco. Their O/O is in San Jose, since they did not get to purchase the former NBC affiliate, KRON4 in San Francisco. So, of course they do not want a show on their network set in San Francisco.

Huh?

Sorry, but that doesn't make any reasonable sense.

Well, they need to refocus on what worked for them in the past. But at this rate, I don't see that happening and personnally I feel sorry for the affiliates who are stuck with NBC's risk-taking schedule.

Glad I'm not the only one who found that one laughable. How about the cost vs return ratio just wasn't there?

You may be right. There's must not be any mid-season hope for them if their best form of salvation is ordering more episodes of a show that was already given a second chance, but whose thousands of rabid "cult" fans help convince Subway to sponsor a show that has showed itself to be a failure. I had thought Ben Silverman was Chuck's champion at NBC, and now he's gone, along with most of the show ideas he helped develop.

If it wasn't for Sunday Night Football, we would see affiliates really be calling for a head count at NBC.

As for the remark about Trauma, I'm thinking the poster might have written that as a joke, but who knows.

That is the stupidest thing I've ever heard.

Today.

You mean "Emergency 2009?" (Trauma)

Here's another stumble, NBC ordered a full season of Parks and Recreation, A horrible show. Must See Thursdays Nights at their best.

NBC had better hope for a big boost from the
Olympics in Vancouver. The network is starting
to look like it did in the late '70s; only this time,
most of the affiliates (unless they're nearing the
end of their affiliation contracts) don't have the
luxury of defecting to ABC, CBS, or even Fox.

I agree on that one I remember in the late70s when" Hello Larry" was their best sitcom.

NBC will actually have something decent on this Saturday night with Notre Dame football.

Hardly. ND plays the Pac-10 doormat WSU in San Antonio of all places. And, they butt up against the USC-Oregon game at the same time.

Lose, lose, lose all the way around (well, except for the dozen or so sports bars in South Bend).

NBC thought it was going to get a perennial football powerhouse in signing ND to an exclusive contract. Didn't work out that way. NBC just can't catch a break.

The biggest mistake NBC made was putting former "Today" Show EP Jeff Zucker in charge of the entertainment division. Then, despite the fact that NBC's ratings were began cratering not long after he took charge, GE continued to bump him up the food chain. Sure he's cut costs, but he's also run the network into the ground!

Yet GE Chair Jeffrey Immelt *continues* to tout his praises!

If NBC were smart (big if) they would use the Olympics as a chance to blow up a lot of their schedule and start fresh.

"Leno" is a huge mistake. He's coming in third behind RERUNS of CSI:NY. Taking an hour out of every night is causing some really bad scheduling decisions (like "Heroes" at 8 PM) and is diminishing the audience for Conan. Time to cut your losses and opt for the "pay" in Leno's "pay or play."

What I heard the real reason for Trauma being cancelled...because Gavin Newsome pulled out his entry for the Governor election in the state of California.

I wonder if they'd consider moving Leno's show to USA at 11/10 CT. The 5-6 million he attracts on NBC would seem to be just as profitable on cable, possibly giving The Daily Show/The Colbert Report fits, and dooming TBS's [George] Lopez Tonight before it can gain a foothold.

Not likely to happen, but an interesting suggestion, nevertheless. It would certainly make a dent in George Lopez, but I doubt it would make much difference for Daily Show/Colbert...I doubt they share that much audience with Leno.

And it could really take a hunk out of the first hour of The Tonight Show, maybe even doom the show before (if?) it gains back audience share - I doubt Conan would think much of that idea

The only win-win here is to put Leno back on the Tonight Show (and he would do it). Yes, NBC is saving money with Leno at 10pm, but I think they're losing bigger $$$ in the long run by giving up the late-night crown, which was formerly a huge cash cow. Conan can go wherever IMO, he's worthless.
Get some unique dramas on 10pm....you never know which will be the next monster hit, but NBC will never have it if they don't try. I remember how a little-regarded show called "Dallas" became a sensation.

As was prophesied several weeks ago by another poster, Leno has now pretty much failed and is damaged goods. His return to The Tonight Show would be an admission of that failure and it is doubtful he would return to the viewership he once had - although he undoubtedly could still generate big bucks for NBC in that role.

The Conan divorce would probably be messy, and costly, and the network would still have to come up with some sort of programming in the vacated 'Leno' slot. Or maybe they could just rerun an old popular show at 10 and episodes of Carson's Tonight Show at 11.

I don't see a lot of mental acumen at NBC.
