NBC to bid bye-bye to Burbank

The entertainment giant will announce plans Thursday to leave its home of more than 50 years for new headquarters near Universal Studios.

The studio has a rich history, as home to such iconic programs as "The Tonight Show," first with Johnny Carson and now with Jay Leno, as well as "Hollywood Squares," "To Tell the Truth" and "Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In." Elvis Presley taped his 1968 Christmas special there, and Tom Brokaw started his NBC career at KNBC-TV Channel 4, which shares the premises.

That's a true loss to television history, and on
a more facetious note, no more jokes about
"beautiful downtown Burbank," made famous on
"Laugh-In." Where is NBC going to move its
L.A. facilities?

Add that to the loss of CBS's old Columbia
Square (although more people probably identify
CBS with Television City) and a golden era keeps
passing.

Hi everyone:

Yeah but look on the bright side. In this world of HDTV, they can create new memories in their new studios.

Think how sad it was San Francisco was back in 1938, when SF had been the west coast point of NBC. Then NBC opened another studio in Hollywood, so movie stars would not have to travel up the coast to SF. That year started the decline of NBC in SF. This link is very interesting if you haven't seen it before. Concerning this thread, go down to the paragraph "Profound changes"

As posted above, they are moving it all to Universal City. Conan is to do his show from historic Studio 1 up on the hill and an entirely new broadcast facility is to be built on the otherside of Lankershim Blvd that will house KNBC, KVEA - Telemundo 52, and the hub from which all programming originates for NBC's west coast stations.

As a side note, regarding the west coast hub, the only O & O program elements that originate in the local markets for local markets like SF or San Diego is the local news. The rest of the programming for each market is sent out of Burbank - later to be Universal City.

I worked at the Burbank lot for several years....very sad to see it go.

I posted another link on the Los Angeles TV board...but yeah, a lot of history there at 3000 West Alameda Avenue in Burbank. It's right there on par with CBS Television City. Of course, with the consolidation with Universal, it was bound to happen, and with the Universal Studio property there's lots of room to expand.

I went to NBC for a taping for the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, and it's a really nice facility. At least will still have the Warners and Disney/ABC in Burbank.

Will NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams to California also? What about SNL?
Nothing has been announced to suggest that anything in NY will be affected by the changes in LA. 30 Rock will still be HQ and will continue to function as usual.

There has been not much activity lately at NBC Burbank except for Leno, Days of our Lives, Access Hollywood, and Ellen DeGeneres (produced and syndicated by Warner Bros., but taped at NBC).

At least CBS will have no intentions of moving out of Television City anytime soon; and with several non-CBS shows like "American Idol", "Are You Smarter Than a Fifth-Grader", "Real Time with Bill Maher", and "Dancing With The Stars" currently taping there to go along with the usual tenants, it's busier than ever these days.

I figured NBC might be thinking about this, with other shufflings in process and/or completed. They moved CNBC's LA bureau from Burbank to somewhere at Universal several months ago, and also the CNBC San Fran/Silicon Valley bureau moved (to where KNTV is?) about the same time.

I guess if the rumors are true that the contract won't be renewed in 2009 for Days of Our Lives (and it doesn't move to another network), then NBC will have less to pack and move by the time the new facility is done and operational.

What shows are taped at the ABC production center? Where are the Disney shows taped?

Medical Dramas "Grey's Anatomy & "General Hospital" still uses The Prospect Studios in Hollywood (Owned by ABC), While ABC's corporate headquarters are located in Beautiful Downtown Burbank.

When NBC plans to move, Looks like both "Days" & "Ellen" will be looking for new homes. "Days" might be going over to SONY in Culver City. "Ellen's" new home would be over at CBS in L.A. or where "Tyra" used to do her show.-Although WB will continue to syndicate it through its Telepictures subsibidary.

Brian Williams addressed this tonight at the end of NBC Nightly News. A ton of viewers wrote in to him after he announced NBC was moving its studios from Burbank to LA. Apparently, they thought this included NBC's Manhattan HQ. Even his in-laws caught the announcement the night before and thought his show was moving to LA. So he had to set the record straight on-air tonight and clear things up for the in-laws. It was kind of funny, and definitely a light moment on the evening news for once.

I had no idea BION that the Peacock was leaving Burbank.

I actually saw that city once - from up on the hill at Universal City.

Where was Columbia Square?

SNL and NBC Nightly News are definitely not moving out of NBC New York Studios. They are permanent East Coast shows for the network.

Tyra Banks' show is also done at Television City.

That's because all the stages on the Burbank lot are, or almost all in use. Leno is in stage 3. When Telemundo 52 moved onto the lot a few years ago, they took stage 5 for their news, which prompted Access Hollywood to move down to Johnny's old home, Stage 1. Days takes up stages 2 & 4. KNBC news is in 10 and there is no 6,7, or 8, which leaves Ellen in 9 with 11 left over to rent out. I would be surprised if it was empty at the moment though.
