NBC using old NBA music on Olympic basketball coverage

I noticed at the start of the games that NBC was using the old "NBA on NBC" music during the US Olympic basketball games. It's funny because their coverage of all other Olympic sports either has no music or the regal Olympic music. The up tempo synthisyzed music is so out of place that even Bob Costas had to make note of it when they played it saturday night while he was promoting the overnight live coverage of the gold medal game. Does NBC miss the NBA so much that they have to find a way to cling to it with this old music? It's not that I don't like the music - I actually think it's pretty good. It just seems a little pathetic for them to haul it out of the closet for something like this.

I think it's very appropriate. Basketball in the olympics is pretty much nba international.
Even the foreign teams have at least 2 to 3 nba players on them.

You're a little slow on the draw. This has been discussed here already, and Bob Costas and the rest have been mentioning it since the first game in the Olympics. At the gold medal game it didn't seem out of place because I had gotten used to it from all the previous games.

I don't think it's a matter of NBC "missing" the NBA - they had an opportunity to renew their contract back in 2002, and chose not to. Perhaps they felt that there are still a lot of people out there who remember and really liked this theme song, and it was just their way of bringing back memories of better days gone by...and perhaps taking a subtleshot at the inferior NBA music/coverage that ESPN/ABC has provided since 2003.

Personally, just being able to hear that song on TV again made me want to watch the basketball games so much more than I otherwise would have (yes, I know, I'm in a very small minority).
