It should be simple for stations to keep running a local weather feed if they so choose. After all, they already have the necessary equipment (ie. video server/CG/switcher-in-a-box) to make it happen. It's just a matter of modifying the system so it just plays nothing but local content. Depending on how they were set up in the first place, modification may not even be needed. Well, they may want to get rid of the WX+ logos in the L-bar, but beyond that, the servers should be good to continue running local WX content (or really any other content a station chooses -- like a 5-minute newsbrief that gets overwritten a few times a day).
After all, just because WX+ went away doesn't mean the digital subchannels go away... and it's not like any of these stations have anything better to put on their subchannels. WSTM, for example, already has one empty subchannel ... 3.4 has been blank ever since "The Box" music network folded. (They have WX+ on 3.2 and their sister station WSTQ-LP, a CW affiliate, on 3.3.)
Here's a thought: WX+ was folded because NBC bought the Weather Channel. Why doesn't NBC revamp WX+ so it carries WX Channel branding? Better yet, let NBC affiliates carry the WX Channel full-time on their subchannels. When it's time for "Local on the 8s," affiliates would have the option to trigger the usual music & gfx slideshow, or they could have it trigger a video forecast produced by the local affiliate (like on WX+). The plan might ruffle feathers with the cable companies, but it would expand the WX Channel's audience to people who don't have cable or satellite -- especially after everyone's forced to go digital next year.
I have to admit, I always liked how the Weather Channel was independent of the other networks, doing its own thing. But, if they're going to be owned by NBC, they might as well make the most of it for both sides.
