NBC/Yahoo!

NBC and Yahoo (internet site, not radio net) have announced an alliance. What does it mean for the radio networks?

On a related note, FSR's JT the Brick is already saying good bye to Boston listeners because his station goes CBS 1/1/13.

I read it differently...the radio "venture", as in Yahoo's network partner, was completely ignored, got no mention in any press or blog reports, and will most certainly be affected as Yahoo and Rivals writers/contributors enhance a competitor (NBC) and vice versa. It's stunning to me to see Yahoo and NBC cut a deal of this magnitude that leaves the radio network out in the cold...does Ken Fuchs even know or care that YSR exists?

I think it depends on whether NBC Sports Radio get Dan Patrick. If they do then they have no reason to merge with Yahoo Sports Radio. If they don't get him then they have all the reason to merge with them for their programming during the day

I think you're all missing the bigger point. If by chance Yahoo Sports Radio and NBC Sports Radio decided to partner, they now seemingly have permission from the corporate licensing group.

It's probably possible Yahoo Sports and NBC Sports formed this venture without any input from the radio networks.

If there wasn't any corporate "synergy" between the companies, a radio partnership might have been rejected.

Yahoo has close to nothing to offer outside of Houston when it comes to radio partners. NBC does not own stations and has little to no affiliate base. CBS, ESPN and Fox are in the radio business.

Until CBS Started Up. Yahoo was the #3 sports stations in most markets. if they already had an ESPN OR Fox Affiliates. and if anything CBS Sports Radio is getting either stations Dumping ESPN or Fox and some dumping yahoo. or are a music station flipping over to Sports.

Yahoo/CBS will battle for the #3 spot in most markets for affiliaitiies

Actually the affiliate sales "food chain" now looks like this:

1. ESPN
2. Premiere (Fox Sports Radio and DirecTV's Dan Patrick Show)
3. Cumulus (CBS Sports Radio and Jim Rome)
3 1/2. Dial Global (NBC Sports Radio and Westwood One/DG play by play)
5. Yahoo! Sports Radio

I'm only quoting this because its important to remember that Yahoo Sports Radio (owned by Gow Broadcasting, not Yahoo) has a different existence than NBC Sports (the best known sports division of Comcast) OR NBC Sports Radio (an offering from Dial Global). A merger of Yahoo Sports Radio and NBC Sports Radio isn't impossible, but is far from an easy combination. In fact, its unrelated to this story, period.

I'd take slight issue with socalguy's pecking order, though: Shouldn't YSR still have a slight edge, already being a full-time network alongside FSR, ESPN, and CBS?

That is come January. but Yahoo is still Currently viewed as #3 since CBS isnt up and running full board yet. and if anything CBS is Robbing From Fox & ESPN Affiliates more than they are robbing Yahoo Affiliates.

and those CBS isnt stealing from are Start up's from Scratch like in Cincinnati. again i wonder how many of the CBS Sports radio stations that arent already all sports (CBS O&O's like in NYC, CHI, Cle, Pit) or Cumulus owned ESPN/Fox/Yahoo Stations. or newly christened stations from music outlets on FM.

How many yahoo affiliates are currently planning to Jump to CBS. Not many i do believe. and how many current sports stations are actually rumored to be jumping to NBC. What is the Affiliate list like for NBC compared to yahoo.

Looking at the Affiliate listings on the Yahoo Sports Radio & NBC Sports Radio websites

NBC Sports Radio lists 179 Stations
Yahoo Sports Radio lists 379 Stations

so it seems to me Yahoo is in 4th and NBC in 5th not looking through the CBS list yet

NBC and Dial Global do not own radio stations, so they are at a disadvantage in signing-up stations. They don't have their own station base. I think NBC & Dial Global should place the sports updates on NBC News Radio (move the feeds to :15 and :45), and downsize the long-form programming and syndicate a few of the long-form shows.
