NBC10 HD on hold

According to LauraNachman.net, NBC10's plans to build a HD studio are on hold, possibly because of the chance of a pending sale. We shall see.............. ???

I really don't believe NBCU will be selling NBC10. The recent announcement to sell NBC6 in Miami and NBC30 in Hartford reflect NBC's new policy of focusing on properties in the top ten markets. NBC10 clearly is in this top ten market range. NBC-TV has always owned properties in the Philadelphia demographic market going back to the WRCV-TV 3 days.

INPUT FROM WIKIPEDIA: UPDATE ON NBC10 HD: - WCAU-TV is currently building a brand new state of the art HD control room.WCAU-TV plans to debut their new HD control room, graphics and set in late August or Sept 2008.

Why would the network sell off an O&O station in a major TV market?

Probably not sell but maybe a trade with CBS for KYW? It seems NBC is trying to fix its past mistakes (KRON and KYW) but who knows what's up with NBC these days. There was a rumor on the board that NBC was selling KNTV and WRC-TV. KNTV, sure, but WRC-TV that houses their Washington Bureau--no way!!! WRC was the one that made it look suspicious.

NBC never owned KYW. It was a westinghouse station. CBS owned WCAU and sold it to NBC when Westinghouse bought CBS. Westinghouse which changed its name to CBS could not own both stations. Elsewhere on the board, someone speculated that FOX would want to buy WCAU. Why? Only WPVI and WHYY will be VHF stations next year. All the others including channel "3" and channel "10" will be UHF stations.

However, the way ATSC DTV works, UHF is better than VHF and channel number is independent from frequency, thus the network stations will stay "3 6 & 10" even if they're on 26, 6, and 34.

Low VHF (i.e.: Channel 6) is especially bad for DTV, and it was just bad luck of the draw that WPVI ended up with that assignment. Rumor has it, though, that Channel 62 is petitioning to move its digital frequency to 10 when the final transition occurs, which would then open up 49 for WPVI.

Even 13 years down the road, the vast majority of viewers still think of Channel 3 as NBC and Channel 10 as CBS mainly because that's what they had been since the very beginning. We may know to turn to "NBC 10" and "CBS 3" but for that split second we think of the old affiliation. NBC swapping WCAU for KYW again might not be a bad idea. It would, however, mean the end of the call letters, which would be sad.

The most important thing that will happen is after the transition to digital is complete the big 4 (ABC, NBC, FOX and CBS) will lose their UHF discount. That is right now a UHF only counts as half a station. So that might effect buying habbits but NBC and ABC are no where near close to their cap for buying stations. And the while the FCC said this will happen after the transition they haven't said WHEN after the transition so it's open.

(The FCC also said other station owner groups will eventually lose the UHF discount as well but exactly when they haven't said)

So while some stations owners may be thinking of that as they buy and sell. While for right now stations must map to their analog frequency there is nothing to prevent the FCC from changing that rule anytime, though they certainly wouldn't do that till after Feb 2009, the FCC of today isn't as independent minded as they were in the old days

For those of us having a hard time with complex new acronyms, due to existing attention deficit challenges, would you now like to clearly explain exactly what a UHF discount is?

I feel discounted every time I watch a newscast or infomercial on channel 10.
