Saw the promo during last night's newscast. They'll be doing a two-part investigation on Wednesday's and Thursday's 10PM newscasts.

I'll have to check that out.

On a related note, does anyone know what the story was with the 89.7 pirate in Lincoln/Talladega? It boomed in like a class C station from 12/15 to 1/6, but seems to have went to intermittent legal micropower after that. Did the FCC pay them a visit?

Did anyone see this story? I was watching another network at the time? What did the folks at nBC 13 come up with?

Basically last night they just aired some censored clips illustrating the foul language that Club 90.7 has been airing and how they have dissed 95.7 Jamz. (Not a call to violence or anything like that, just "F**k 95.7".) Tonight they show where they tracked down the operators - something the FCC apparently tried to do and failed - and knocked on their door.

It was the lead story on Wednesday's 10PM newscast and I taped it. Will tape tonight's story as well. Can someone digitize it and upload it if I send them the tape?

Pretty interesting IMHO. Looks like it was some kind of beef between the R&R Records (studios) and JAMZ. Funny because the guy in charge (can't remember his name) over at JAMZ said they wouldn't play R&R's stuff because they didn't have a hit.<P ID="signature">______________

Well, they don't. Have you ever heard of any rappers from Birmingham? Neither has anyone else, including most people who live there. If a local artist ever made a national or regional impact, you can bet that 95.7 would jam them (pun intended) down our throats.

If 95.7 were a true urban, a local show would make sense. It's a CHR that just happens to focus almost exclusively on hip-hop, though, and their business is playing what's on the chart.

I loved how the guy answered the phone "90.7" and then tried to pretend that he didn't know what the reporter was talking about. Funny stuff.

NBC13 exposes even more shocking info

Wandered over to NBC13 website to look for the story; can't find anything about the pirate, but I was pleased to find that the top headlines included:

Gorilla Baby Boom Under Way At Zoo
Caught On Tape: Man Steals Puppy

Let's see: rappers are squabbling... animal stories lead the news... it's a sunny Friday here in Mississippi...

All must be right with the world :)

Pirate station exposes the problems with JAMZ

JAMZ is the ones that tattled on the station to the FCC hoping to stop it. It's funny that it took a television station to get to stop broadcasting the pirate station.

JAMZ has made it clear that they don't care to play anything that isn't a hit (by their standards). On the local artists, JAMZ does play Birmingham J, but that's it. However, none of his songs have ever became a hit not even on a regional level (Payola anybody?).

Well, actually the format of 95.7 is a Rhythmic/Crossover i.e. Rhythmic CHR. Their target demo supposed to be the African American and Hispanic males and females in the 18-34 range, but it's actually 12-24 African American males and females (I've seen their actual demographic info).

This pirate station alone is proof of how ass-backwards the Birmingham radio scene on the urban side is. I've been saying this for the longest and will continue to say it, KISS is not the problem JAMZ is. If they had competition they wouldn't be so repetitive and late with airing of actual hip-hop and R&B songs. But I'm too concerned because competition for JAMZ is just on the horizon. It will most likely come from the 107.7 frequency formatted as a Rhythmic/Crossover targeting them while reclaiming the core 18-34 female audience from KISS.

I didn't think a licensed station could file a complaint unless interference was an issue, which it wouldn't have been here. I figured that the complaint came from one of the three co-channel non-comms in Anniston, Tuscaloosa, or Montgomery. If you're going to broadcast uncensored rap, it's probably not a good idea to do it on a frequency where people are used to hearing preachers.

No, it'll most likely come from Q moving in a more rhythmic direction or WENN dropping gospel. Citadel appears to be committed to 107.7 as it is, even though that hasn't worked so well.

I doubt The Q will go more rhythmic again because they saw a drop in their #'s when they tried it back in '02. However, I did see the possibly of WENN dropping gospel to go Mainstream Urban this time last year with them moving to 105.5, but a number of factors have kicked in since then. 1)The presence of Hot 107.7 taking what little revenue in the urban demo that is left. 2)The success of the format @ 105.5 signal. 3)CC Birmingham continue reluctance to go back to the Mainstream Urban format since the failure of WENN (although it was the signal that caused it).

I agree Citadel is committed, but if the format doesn't make money or ratings then they going to have to skew it or completely change format.
