NBC's College Bowl

This is apparently a reboot of the quiz show first appearing in the 60's (I think). Several teams of college students answer questions in a variety of categories.

I remember the original questions as being relatively difficult to answer but what you would expect when questioning a college student back then. I do not remember any 'softball' questions.

In this respect NBC is failing badly. After watching the last two shows it is apparent today's college kids are as dumb as a box of rocks OR the questions are a mixture of softball questions and social site knowledge. The major lack of knowledge seems to be history (both local and world wide) and an almost complete lack of science based questions. Seems you could prep for this show by watching TMZ the day before.

Big failure NBC. Still better than Faux though.

What time and day is this on? Curious, as I thought Game Show Network was about the only channel that'd be developing or rolling out newer game show concepts?

As a card-carrying member of the Grouchy Old Geezer-American Community, I have to agree with Landtuna. I watched about half of tonight's show. To me, while the kids are obviously smart, it seems that they are being told to tone it down. They had a couple of math questions a few minutes ago that I learned in 9th Grade Algebra. These kids should be well versed in Calculus and other advanced mathematical subjects.

And then there's the host. Peyton Manning? Really? And what in the world is his brother Cooper doing there? Charles Barkley and Shaquille O'Neal were unavailable? This is not a show that should be drowning in comedy. Allen Ludden and Robert Earle are spinning in their graves.

I realize that the original GE College Bowl absolutely wouldn't fly today (and there was a reason why the original was on Sunday afternoons, and not in prime time), but NBC has absolutely dumbed it down too much. I give it a D, only because I have sympathy for the kids.

It airs Friday evenings on NBC (7pm MST). And this doesn't seem to be anything new. I called it a reboot and I think that's just what it is. Amazing lack of inspiration on the network suits' part.

It's in their second season. Friday Nights at 8/7c and when they get an answer wrong that clearly older people like myself knows and they get it wrong I just laugh. I think last night's episode when they introduce the kids I think one said they make tik tok videos. They should be studying.

Stick with "University Challenge" on BBC Two. It's a lot closer to "GE College Bowl" in terms of the difficulty of the questions. The show is on Mondays at 8:30 PM (British time) and is usually available on YouTube within an hour after it ends.

I'm not sure if it's still around, but "Brain of Britain" (BBC Radio 4) is ridiculously difficult. The last time I heard it was in early 2021, from an empty studio due to COVID restrictions, but I couldn't find it at all this year. It usually runs from spring through midsummer.

I don't remember enough about "Password" but I hate to think what Ludden would think of what they have done to his other show. Childish behavior by everyone including the host.

This sure doesn't seem like the "College Bowl" I remember. Surprised no one posted about it last season when it actually started.

Late last night I found a "College Bowl" program on Youtube from one year ago and I have to admit it was a much more pleasant experience. Most of the questions were still in the softball category but the banter between the hosts made it much more interesting.

NBC isn't on my "must see TV" list and hasn't been for a long while now. I just noticed it a few weeks ago while recording some shows for my wifey.

The distinction is quite clear: the late Bob Earle was a college professor.

I can recall when television stations broadcast local high school quiz shows. How many programs of that sort remain?

"As Schools Match Wits" has been on Springfield, MA, TV since 1961.

And since 1983, New Hampshire Public Television has aired "Granite State Challenge."

WRC-TV in Washington, D. C. maintains that its program, It's Academic, is "the longest-running TV quiz show in the world." There is a Springfield, MA connection, however. Sophie Altman, a Springfield native, is credited with creating the concept and format of the WRC-TV show.
