NBC's Coverage of 2021 Tokyo Olympics and Qualifiers

With the "bubble" now ruptured, cancellation of the Games with a few days to go is on the table.

The Olympics should have been cancelled months ago. Japan should be concentrating their efforts to get people vaccinated rather than putting on a big show.

I believe there is too much revenue on the table for them to be canceled now. But nothing surprises me these days so it could indeed happen.

I'm sure the IOC and others would consider many factors and a lot of thought would go into it before they'd cancel...There are already no crowds permitted and some athletes can't participate after testing +. If it gets to the point where many more start contracting Covid, especially if it starts impacting the games in a big way, or if the games will end up being a huge bust financially and otherwise all things considered (if that's not already the case), they may pull the plug. They could also consider sending everyone home and postponing for another year, but it would suck for the athletes who've already busted their buns to train and qualified to compete.

The opening ceremony is scheduled to happen in 3 days and a few hrs from now, so they'd better make some decisions soon.

The entire US women's gymnastics team has left the Olympic Village and rolled the dice on being able to stay safe in a hotel. This is getting ridiculous. Please, IOC, NBC and everyone else who's thinking only of the money they'll lose if this thing doesn't go on: LET ALL THE ATHLETES GO HOME, RIGHT NOW!

I concur; it's just amazing that the powers that be are determined not to delay or reschedule, ignoring the reality of the pandemic.

Are the athletes and others contracting the virus vaccinated? If not…why not? I think that is an important question.
Since the delta variant is showing an enhanced ability to bleed through the vaccine, that may not be as important a factor as it once was. I just read that Texas has reported its first case of the next variant, lambda. No word yet on how well, if at all, that little devil has mutated to further frustrate current vaccines.

I assume there are some athletes who are science-skeptic or have some other reasons for not vaccinating. As of now, that's not a crime, or even something anyone can ask them about and expect to get an answer. Sovereign citizens, y'know. It's my body, it's none of your business what is or isn't in it.

FWIW, two of my co-workers who were fully vaccinated with Moderna jabs have caught Covid within the past week and are exhibiting at least moderate symptoms. One of them lives with family who are in the medical profession, and practiced every suggested covid-related protocol to the letter.

Then cancel the China winter Olympics next February then, might as well have the Tokyo games since cancelling them at the last minute means Japan will have to wait years to get another Olympics.

I’m aware there are breakthrough cases. It was wondering aloud so to speak as it seems the number in a comparatively limited population seems unusual for that to be the predominant scenario. As for age-eligible skeptics, I have zero sympathy. If you’re going to be in close quarters with other people particularly in a foreign country, get the stinking vaccine. There are zero, nil, nada valid excuses to do otherwise at this point.

I think the 2021 Olympics will have two asterisks. One, they were delayed from 2020, Two, many competitors have dropped out. The result is likely a much a lower audience figure.

But now it's darn the torpedoes and full speed ahead for the peacock network and The Olympics. Today is the final Days of Our Lives until August 10th. Opening Ceremonies all day tomorrow starting at 7am Eastern, first live then replayed twice in Prime Time and Late Night. Only a 90 minute local window for news and such during the games on the West Coast stations between 3 and 4:30pm. Between NBC, MSNBC, CNBC, NBCSN, and USA, all events will be carried live.

So they aired them live this morning?

The IOC has final say. The contracts the host city sign give them no power to cancel.
And since most of the IOC's people (and all of its money) are snug and safe in Switzerland, they have nothing to gain and billions to lose if these Olympics in far-off Japan aren't completed. It all becomes clear now. Of course, Japanese outrage could lead to a massive uprising and fatal disruption of the Games by huge, violent crowds. But mob rule is so fundamentally un-Japanese that it doesn't stand a chance of happening.
