NBC's Deal Or No Deal: Is It About To Be Cancelled?

Does anyone know what has happened to NBC's Deal Or No Deal since it hasn't been on in several weeks? Do you think that the NBC version is about to be cancelled since the syndicated version is now bigger than the NBC version? If it is, will the syndicated version change over to where it'll be the top prize of $1,000,000 instead of $500,000?

NBC's Deal Or No Deal is a perfect example of a show that was once a Top 10 show and now has struggled to rank in the Top 100 shows with ratings of 4 and 5 every week.

Thoughts and comments?

Maybe because it's overexposed and people are getting tired of it? After all, look what happened to ABC when they ran Who Wants To Be A Millionaire for 4 nights a week at one point.

At least Deal Or No Deal did/has not gone into celebrity editions of the show like Who Wants To Be A Millioniare did and what hurt Millioniare when that happened not to mention people posting spoilers of where they spilled the beans about people winning on both shows.

What's with the networks these days? Anyone knows that overexposing a game show means sure death in the ratings!! ???

Can't they be happy with solid ratings once a week??? DOND is a good example of a game show that could have gone on for years, if they hadn't overexposed it.

Who Wants To Be A Millionaire is another example as is The Weakest Link. Who is running these places? The Village Idiot?!?

Personally, the problem with DOND is not necessarily overexposure (that's CNBC's fault), but rather blatant spoiling of the gameplay, especially for games where the contestant wins the million -- promos for the show let not only the cat out of the bag, but several prides of cats. Stuffing the shows with fluff also makes the game tedious to watch, such as a 90-minute episode that aired in October, following Obama's infomercial -- practically, a 30-minute game was stretched to 90-minutes with constant, inane deliberations with the peanut gallery at each offer. Viewers are more interested in the game, not "Let's Make a Deal" in slo-mo.

Near the end of its network run, NBC treated "The Weakest Link" like the proverbial red-headed stepchild by scheduling it on Sundays after NBA Basketball -- it it followed an overrunning game, it's seen in progress; if it follows Dateline NBC or another program, that program is seen in its entirety, with Link joined in progress.

I just read somewhere recently where 1 particular DOND ep took around **5 hours** to finish taping. Some of the eps look like they really went longer than an hour, but 5?? Seems like production such as that would start getting expensive if taping went overtime with any regularity.

The last couple of DONDs I've seen, I really didn't have to watch the whole ep, just a couple of promos. You'd think somebody would get a clue to NOT give out punch lines in advance in order to get viewership up, but...there seems to be way too much need for clues lately when it comes to media anymore.

IMHO, the concept is getting tiresome. Perhaps that is why they tried some twists to the game the past several months. I don't believe a game based ENTIRELY on luck will survive longterm. Atleast with shows like "Smarter than a 5th grader" you can play along.

Not to mention that show LOOKS like it is rigged. Not saying it really is, but c'mon now.

Isn't Jay Leno slated to premiere a primetime weeknight show sometime this coming year? Maybe they are clearing out DoND for Leno.

Maybe, but I don't think DOND was ever in the 10pm slot.

NBC said they're going to give the show a rest. It will come on for special event type of shows and may fill holes in the schedule when something else fails, but it won't have a regular place on the schedule. They can do this because the syndicated production keeps the set, host and producers working on the program. It would be easy to tell them to put together a prime time show for a particular day and make it happen.

Will this happen with Jay Leno at 10pm. People will get tired of him and start flipping around to different channels? Then if NBC cancels Leno, he will be regarded as damaged goods and not likely be picked up at another network for late night slot? Is that NBC's ulterior plan?

DOND is such a boring game show, conceptually. It's basically like watching someone play the lottery. There is absolutely no skill involved as people just guess random numbers. And once you pick your case there is no way to increase your odds of eliminating any of the lower amounts - other than just random guessing, so there is no concept of strategy in this game. And for most contestants any amount of money is a lot, so you almost never see anyone take the risk to try and get to 1 million. At least with Who Wants to be a Millionaire you can play along and answer questions to see how much you know, and the contestants have options (lifelines) to increase their odds of winning.

Just saw tonight advertised on NBC. Howie Do That. A show starring Howie Mandel. It is the rip off of David Letterman and Rupert (of Hello Deli). When Dave would send Rupert out with a camera disguised in a baseball cap, and an earpiece in his glasses and have him annoy people. Then Jay Leno stole that idea years later and had Howie Mandel do close to the exact samething.

Well now that is going to the basis for Howie's new show.

Even if Leno does fail at 10 I bet that ABC would immediately be at the door to offer him a contract for a show at 11:35. I dont know how Nightline is doing these days, but since ABC tried to kill it off while Koppel was still there it wouldnt surprise me to see them ditch it for Leno instead and bump Kimmel back a half hour.
