NBC's odd fascination with Twitter

From the Weather Channel to Seacrest on the Olympics, NBC seems to pushing Twitter really hard. Even non O&O affiliates seem to have a segment dedicated to a twitter-inspried issue. What's going on here? Does Comcast own stock or a controlling interest in twitter? Or is this yet another way for NBC to insert more useless fluff into their programming?

NBC is terrible as it is. I can't see this helping.

It's not just NBC. A lot of networks can be seen pushing a hashtag on their air. For example during FOX's Saturday night baseball series, part of the bug on the screen was the hashtag "#BaseballNight"; during the All-Star Game, you saw "#ASG".

Also, don't get WWE fans started with their obsession with Twitter. Sure it's on NBC-owned USA and Syfy but those shows are mainly WWE's business.

Yes, most shows feature a "hashtag" anymore (it'll always be the number sign to me! ;D ), but NBC networks actually carve out programming time to discuss "social media" impact on whatever show is on & feature tweets. I'm not aware of any other broadcast network doing this.
