NBC's WWE Saturday Night's Main Event

NBC & WWE put on a good production last night. The highlight had to be the Shane McMahon versus Shawn Michaels match where they went flying off the ladder into the two tables.

Anyone have other thoughts on this?

I noticed that WWE placed their bug in the top right instead of the lower left like usual. The way NBC bleeped Vince McMahon's "Kiss My Ass" at the beginning and Steve Austin's "Son Of A Bitch" was strange. It looked nice and all but showed that they were in the smaller Cobo Arena, since the main portion of Joe Louis Arena was being used for the CCHA College Hockey Championships, which was being aired by FOX Sports Net at the same time.

As for WWE and NBC, they're going to have another special some time in the summer.
______________

But then again and I can't understand this one is that WWE will censor words during a Pay-Per View. I forget witch PPV it was last summer but they kept dropping the audio when the fans yelled "Ahole" or something. As a Pay-Per View I think it should be a raw feed to the 34.95 per show viewer. But then again I think Vince knows he has alot of little kids 12-16 that watch so I guess he's trying to show some class.

It's actually simple economics as to why they censor the PPV feed.
I would say a good half to more than half of the subs for the PPV event are younger children (as you said 12ish), who's parents buy the programming. And in a lot of those cases the parents sit and watch it with them. If the parents heard you ash hole or something worse, they would never buy the program again, and the WWE would lose money on the PPV.

Bleeping and the "Fresh" FCC Fines

It doesn't matter who's production it is. It's NBC's air and they have the right to edit programming as they see fit for their affliates. Plus, this show was on at 8pm on the East coast. UPN also does NOT let those words slip by as you stated. When I've tuned into "Smackdown", I've heard profanity edited before -- and not in clips, either.

Let's also NOT forget that just two days prior, the FCC issued a new set of fines for some networks. CBS got nailed -- again -- this time for an episode of "Without A Trace" that featured a teen orgy. From what I understand, no sex was shown, but the illusion was there so people knew what was going on. In addition (and one thing I don't understand), is that this show is on at 10pm on the east coast. So, the rules are slightly different.

But given the fact that the new FCC fines are fresh in the mind of programmers, NBC probably decided to play it safe because of it and didn't want to deal with the complaints that would most likely come flying in.

The FCC has stated, after issuing the recent series of fines, that they will be focusing on cable next.

It's simply theater--giving the public what it wants so people will watch and adverisers will buy. Some critics attack such programming in the vein of, "If that's the best they can do.........." but the real judgment lies in whether the viewers are there and the ad revenue is flowing. Yes, it may be camp, but those who don't like it have the option not to watch. It's entertainment, to many people escapist fair, much akin to a cheap detective novel or some such. It gets people's minds off everything else and provides a moment of respite from taxes, Iraq, politics, and all the rest. If the Main Event and programs like it channel our concerns away from some of the weighty, often depressing events in the world, even for an hour or two, then the program has achieved its purpose and has provided the public with a bit of a "service."

Where`d you see that Richard? The FCC doesn`t have any cable oversight (though some want to change that).

I forget . Cable TV answers to the PUC and NOT the FCC.Who controls Satelite (Dish, Directv, etc). The PUC still and how is it determined if it's the FCC or PUC.

It turned out to be a lot better than I thought it was going to be.

Hopefully the ratings will match the quality of the show.

Great to hear JR's voice again.

He was dead on and consistent.

The matches were all right to say the least.

It wasn't eyepopping but for two hours it was definitley worth the entertainment.

I am well aware of that, which is why I was shocked -- and frightened -- that the FCC is going to look into this next. I am guessing basic cable, not premium nets. It was all over the news Friday. A simple search should give you plenty.

> Hopefully the ratings will match the quality of the show.

They didn't. It did a 2.9 and finished behind the NCAA tournament, Cops, and "The Sixth Sense". Fewer people watched it than usually watch RAW or Smackdown. Putting it on opposite a major sports event was probably a bad move. I bet it would have done better last week.

Was "Main Event" broadcast live in the Eastern and Central time zones??

I personally think all future "Raw", "Smackdown!" and "Main Event" telecasts should be live (unless they are originating from Europe, in which case, they would have to be broadcast on a few hours' delay to get the telecasts in prime-time here in the U.S.).

Yes.

Smackdown will never be live unless UPN/CW moved it to Tuesday (the day it is usually taped). Having it live on Thursday or Friday would screw up the house show schedule.

I think Smackdown lately may be even better than Raw but the fact it is taped takes the luster off Smackdown. I don't see why they can't run a house show on Tuesday nights, which they do do sometimes and have Smackdown air once in a while LIVE on a Friday Night.

Maybe the week before a big PPV, having a LIVE Smackdown would entice more viewers to stay home.

However, the FCC rules don't play by network standards -- 10PM refers to local time in each time zone, not "10/9 Central". CBS got nailed because this show aired at 9PM Central & Mountain.

I have never known UPN to do anything live. Is that somthing with the Network or what? UPN had the Source Awards and the Vibe Awards which was taped a week before it aired.

But it was Good to see Saturday Nights Main Event. I hope they can do somthing every Saturday Night on USA like what WCW use to do for many years.
______________

There have been a handful of occasions SmackDown was live though it is extremely rare. Most notably the week of 9/11.

Actually, I think they`re referring to pressuring cable in regards to "a la carte," offering viewers the choice to unbundle their channel lineups to avoid shows deemed objectionable should a subscriber want to do so. That`s the only thing i`ve seen in the many stories i`ve read on the "indecency" subject that refers to the FCC & cable.

:sigh:

No, this is not what they were referring to, as this is a few months old. I know what I read and what I heard.
