NBCSN Finally Gets Pro Football...From Canada

They should be airing the games now when they are the only football to be found anywhere.
By waiting till late Aug. they will be going head-to-head with the NFL and NCAA.

Still better than NFL Network which would only air them between July 1 and the start of the NFL preseason.

It looks like I'll continue to watch the games online as I've been doing since the start of the season (no NBC Sports Network in my package).

That is better than nothing. At least the Grey Cup playoffs will get full coverage. Even with a couple of presumed tape-delayed (11 ET) telecasts, it's better than that ridiculous NFLN deal.
As far as ESPN3 streaming, I've enjoyed that, but the last couple of years, there was a glitch with their stream for the Grey Cup final, so having a TV option this year is a good move.

There have also been rumors that the UFL will show up on CBS Sports Network this fall. Wouldn't hold my breath on that, since the league is barely alive.

The revived USFL is also looking for a TV deal for Spring 2013. We'll see it that actually gets off the ground or is stillborn like the AAFL in 2008.

Makes sense (As well as $EN$E too) as it ain't like the CFL isn't a time-tested proven league (Unlike the ones that CBS Sports Network is considering airing)

Besides, NBC Sports Network isn't very competitive when it comes to College Football (Fox Sports is WAY better at covering it than NBC Sports is). So why not turn to the CFL?

Cheers & 73 ;D

I've seen the Grey Cup on the "America One" network - which also carries IFL games (saw Terrell Owens' debut with the Allen Wranglers on there a few months ago).

UFL signs a deal with CBS Sports Network for Wednesday/Friday games in 2012. Cut and paste of the press release:

CBS SPORTS NETWORK SIGNS DEAL WITH UNITED FOOTBALL LEAGUE
July 26, 2012

CBS Sports Network and the United Football League announced an agreement today that will bring the four-year-old league’s games to a national television audience.

CBS Sports Network will televise two games per week every Wednesday and Friday live throughout the UFL’s eight-week season, culminating with the Championship game in late November. Coverage kicks off on Wednesday, Sept. 19 and Friday, Sept. 21. CBS Sports Network, the cable home of CBS Sports, is available to more than 99 million households across the country.

“We’re very happy to partner with CBS Sports Network in bringing the UFL’s games to football-hungry fans everywhere,” said Bill Mayer, the UFL’s acting Chairman. “CBS Sports has always been identified with excellence in its presentation of football, and the UFL promises to extend that reputation by putting a great product on the field.”

“We’re pleased to partner with the UFL and bring more live football to CBS Sports Network,” said Dan Weinberg, Senior Vice President, Programming, CBS Sports Network. “Fans have an appetite for football at all levels and we’re excited to showcase the UFL.”

The UFL began in 2009. The Las Vegas Locomotives won the first two championships and the William Hambrecht Trophy, named for the UFL founder and Locomotives owner, but were denied a third title last Oct. 21, 2011, when they fell to the Virginia Destroyers. Marty Schottenheimer coaches the Destroyers; Jim Fassel, who took the New York Giants to Super Bowl XXXV, is president, general manager and coach of the Locomotives.

Well-known players who have worn the UFL uniform include quarterbacks Jeff Garcia, Josh McCown, J.P. Losman and Daunte Culpepper, running backs Ahman Green and Dominic Rhodes, kickers Matt Bryant, Steven Hauschka and Graham Gano and kick returner Clifton Smith.

This would be good, if I got this network. Maybe my provider will carry it before the UFL season starts.

If the UFL can develop into a pro-football minor league, it could impact the NFL by giving them another source of players and allowing younger players the time to get more seasoning so they perhaps can make it in the NFL. Perhaps this deal will help the UFL stay viable.

In more alternative football league news, the proposed SPFL, with a spring schedule, claims its games will be on CBS Sports Network. Check the third item on the league's "about" page: http://spfl.com/about.php

This league is not the same as the proposed revival of the USFL.

Of course, the SPFL might be someone's pie in the sky fantasy, or complete BS. We shall see. Would be nice to have some outdoor spring football as a viewing option.

Dead link. I can't get any farther than the main page.

According to some postings on the UFL discussion site (where I got the TV deal info) the full SPFL website was prematurely made available and then taken offline when the CBSSN chatter hit the internet. When I saw it, much of the SPFL site was complete, including the "about" page and a team location map--a number of NFL cities (including Dallas and Houston) were on it.

One of the posters on the UFL site, who is known to be a legitimate source of information, confirmed that a deal with CBSSN was in place.

Of course, like I said earlier, this could all go absolutely nowhere. The "new" USFL is cranking things up, but still has no teams or TV deal.

Reviving the thread for an update:

The UFL has apparently suspended operations as of 10/20 after playing only four weeks of a planned eight week regular season. That leaves CBSSN with some holes in its schedule over the next several weeks.

Allegedly the UFL will resume the season next spring, but in reality it is probably done, joining the WFL, USFL, WLAF, NFL-E, RFL, SFL, and the XFL as another failed alternative league.

CBSSN may think twice about the deal with the yet-to-be-launched SPFL for next spring. The New USFL has already pushed its launch date back to 2014.

Arena Football is hanging on by its fingernails, but might not be long for this world. Wouldn't surprise me if NFL Network passes on running it next year.

Also Fox is cutting back but not having Matt/Harold/Eric/AJ live from San Fransico. CBS Sports Networks can sign up Minor League Hockey,American Basketball Assocation and so on.

But then what live sports would they be able to run once they sell their TNF package to another network in a few years? :p

The AFL made a deal with CBS several months ago; CBS Sports network will carry a weekly Saturday night game(there are a total of 19 telecasts, so they're skipping just one week out of 20), and CBS will provide OTA coverage of the Arena Bowl. I have no idea what the status of the league's labor situation is, but assuming there is a 2013 season, that's where to find it.
