NBCSN shutting down end of 2021

When does the NBA contract come up?
Google gives an instant answer to that query: after the 2024-25 season. If Peacock takes off the way NBCUniversal thinks it will, and cable continues its death spiral, ESPN and TNT may well have competition. And whoever wins will likely take many games to an over-the-top streaming service exclusively, leaving only the big regular season games, NBA semifinals and finals, and high-profile early round playoff games on cable. OTA? May not get a sniff, as the few viewers left won't have enough spending power or live in large enough markets to matter one bit to Corporate America.

I think the one thing NBC regrets is not keeping the NBA.

Suspect that NBCSN won't be the last cable channel this year to make shut-down announcements,as linear (or what I like to call "scheduled")TV continues to see viewership decline.

I agree and also think we will see consolidation among the various channel owners in an effort to spread operating costs over more channels. What you've seen in radio consolidation will take part in cable channels.

NBC Sports does have rights to the NBA but it's through its local editions such as NBC Sports Bay Area for Golden State Warriors and NBC Sports California for the Sacramento Kings. It's just that NBC Sports does this on the local level for now and it will be a wait an see if NBC Sports Local will move to peacock too or not with NBC Sports national.

That is a different deal set up with local teams and the RSN's.

The majority of NBA RSN deals are with Sinclair.

Could put Dan Patrick back on it and Rich Eisen show to for people who don't do Streaming and hire some of the people getting let go by ESPN or Fox Sports or even Chris Rose to do a Baseball show. Try and do a show like Sportscenter with Dan Patrick as one of the Anchors.

Dan Patrick has said he is not doing Sportscenter ever again. He likes what he is doing now and doesn't want any added workload. NBC doesn't own his show. They just have a license to broadcast it.

The owners of show could let NBCSN show it just to keep Channel on air. Also with like NBC don't have a lot on staff that could host a show like Sportecenter but FSN has like Mike Hill and so on. CBS Matt Weiner from NBATV,Jacobson, people from CBSSN Streaming channel

No way ESPNEWS goes away away and overflow if need to show Sportscenter,Sporting Events. FSN2 also shows live Sports.

I always thought that NBCSN was more an RSN than a national cable network just my opinion. NBCSN never tried to be ESPN the few times they tried to do studio shows they canceled them a few months after making their debut The Crossover with Michelle Beadle & Dave Briggs which Beadle got Biggs off the show and he had his own show called SportsDash.

With NBCSN shutting down, the NHL is in the midst of negotiating its next contract.

If they stay with NBC Universal, the likely channel is USA. Otherwise, it's either ESPN or Fox Sports.

NBC knew they were not going to get the NHL contract, this is why they are shutting down NBCSN.

Not sure that NBC is out of the NHL picture completely. However it appears ESPN is close to a deal for some form on NHL package.

The ESPN plan would put some of the games on ESPN+

Here's what the WSJ says about NBC:

Currently, Comcast Corp.’s NBCUniversal is the biggest television partner of the NHL in the U.S. It has a 10-year pact valued at $2 billion that expires at the end of this season. NBCUniversal is also in talks with the NHL about maintaining its relationship with the league, one of the people said. NBCUniversal currently carries most of its coverage on the NBC Sports Network and the NBC broadcast channel. NBCUniversal has said it is shutting down NBC Sports Network at the end of the year and moving its NHL games to the USA Network.

ESPN made it official.
ESPN and the NHL announced a seven-year deal on Wednesday, returning hockey to ESPN for the first time since 2004. Included will be 25 regular-season games on ESPN or ABC, early-round playoff series and one conference final each year, four Stanley Cup Final series on ABC and more than 1,000 games per season streaming on ESPN+. ESPN+ and Hulu will be home to 75 ESPN-produced exclusive telecasts per season.

The deal also includes opening-night games, the NHL All-Star Game and Skills Challenge and other special events. The NHL's out-of-market streaming package (NHL.TV) is also moving to ESPN+ as part of its subscription offerings.
NBC would be bidding for half of the package.
