NBCUniversal Sees Scattered Layoffs In Certain Divisions

NBCUniversal is experiencing scattered layoffs in select divisions as the belt-tightening outlined in 2022 starts to take effect.

Insiders disputed early accounts of the reductions being widespread and amounting to hundreds of positions. Instead, the tally is more in the dozens and does not involve every division. One additional element is the company’s voluntary retirement program process, which business units are factoring into their assessment of operations heading into 2023.

The reductions come as media and tech companies confront a daunting economic landscape and general softness in the advertising market. While NBCU has thus far managed to buck the trend in terms of ad declines, it has acknowledged considering a plan to return the 10 p.m. hour of programming on NBC to local affiliates in the name of cost-cutting. That give-back scenario is on hold for now, sources told Deadline last month.

Supposedly, a handful of positions at NBC News and a few at local NBC owned stations were eliminated, while buyouts were offered to some other employees of NBC owned stations.

Among the latter, KNBC-4 Los Angeles saw several longtime news department employees, including on-air personnel, accepting buyouts that they were offered.

The new year is kicking off with some notable changes at NBC’s newsgathering operations, including daytime and streaming programming shifts as well as layoffs impacting the division.

Over at the digital platform NBC News NOW, Hallie Jackson is getting a vote of confidence with an additional hour of the senior Washington correspondent’s show, which will now air from 5 to 7 p.m. ET.

“On NOW, she’s covered everything from the midterms, to mental health, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and climate change, making sense of the news of the day for our viewers in her signature conversational style, and now, going even deeper with the new hour,” stated Janelle Rodriguez, who was just promoted to executive vp NBC News Now to oversee the service in addition to NBC Nightly News.
