NC Times cuts back radio coverage

Randy Dotinga's column in the NC Times will appear twice monthly.

Chris, step up to the plate! Do an everyday update! Please call me first for engineering help though.

Some weeks I can post everyday; and this week, it's hard to sit down and gather material. Time constraints, my "real" paying job, et al.

As for your offer, yes, I'd like to follow through on that. Otherwise, I have to ask Crusty Bob ... darn radio!

Even though I left the SD market in 2000, each week I always check out the Randy Dotinga column (along with the great sports media column by John Maffei). Maffei always does a great rundown, but many times Randy's articles are rather fluffy, un-newsy, and generalized, rather than updates on Local Radio Happenings. True, the industry is vastly different now, but articles about "misunderstood lyrics" and "trivia from decades ago" aren't exactly must-tune-in columns. I've followed his writings via the internets for years. I think he used to have an AOL Hometown page and randydotinga.com lies dormant -- he used to post his columns there, years ago. Maybe there will be enough "news" to fill two columns instead of four each month.

The OC Register seems to have re-committed some space to their weekly radio column by freelancer Gary Lycan. He has rather lengthy weekly profiles/updates on ocregister.com (search columns under Entertainment tab). Of course, LA is not SD.

The best local "media" blog I have found for the West Coast is the one run out of SF by Rich Lieberman, a somewhat cranky, overly-curmudgeonly type, with apparently lots of bitter insiders who slam him in the comments section. He does great updates on SF Media Comings and Goings (along with his repetitive sometimes-necessary-sometimes-not slams against various Bay Area media outlets).

Seems that in 2011, the local newsprint rags would want to be expanding their coverage online. Guess that's not always the case in this still-depressed media era.

Actually, Media Hack was Randy Dotinga's predecessor as the radio columnist at the North County Times.

But it didn't work out.

It did very much so work out. I left the paper when in Texas for a year working a year 2000 job for John Moore's company. I have written for the NC Times several times since back. However, Lee Enterprises does not pay consultants/stringers very much. I was getting $35 per weekly column in 1997/1998; which was promptly given to the local telco for long distance fees.

That aside, Randy's columns were great considering the time since the last century he penned radio columns.

Question to randy dotinga...I remember when you took over the NCTimes radio column. Carmichael's departure according to him was not how I remember.....did your NC Times editors say Chris Carmichael had left the area or were they looking for someone else when you came into the picture.
I think this sentence from your most recent blog....
"I left the paper when in Texas for a year working a year 2000 job for John Moore's company"....shows you continue to struggle with writing coherent sentences. You mean well, but for goodness sakes man, get a proof reader!!

While San Diego in Exile is spot on about Dotinga's flimsy content, at least Randy could always put a coherent sentence together.

It's OK, the poster may be right; but I know my strengths and weakness in writing. He (or she) has the right not to read either. Based on his previous bile, I suspect who this person is and frankly, it is not worth the time. Plus, I don't have to hear him now ...

Not at all. It's just that there is really only one source of news on sd radio and that would be sdradio.net (if you don't count this blog and maybe I should). The guy means well, no question. His heart is absolutely in the right place. And I hand it to him to do this service and wish him the best in his pursuit of sponsors. No one else is doing it. But for the love of God, can't he have someone proofread his stuff before he posts it? We've had to use our a special decoder to wade through his gnarled sentences for years. Although this may sound mean, it is meant in a constructive way. I merely am saying, if you are going to all the trouble and cost to put up a website that uses English (instead of say, pictures) that the ability to construct understandable sentences would be nice. I guess all I'm saying is that Chris may want to simply read his stuff before he puts up. And I'm not talking about the reprinted press releases which he drops in word for word. Those seem to be petty smooth.

OK, we heard from Ohio. How about Iowa?

They'll be here petty soon, I imagine.

Randy...you have quoted from this blog before in print.....we know you read this blog....please weigh in....we know your journalistic integrity mandates you will tell us the truth....what's up?

This is not a blog, it's a message board. (Or "forum".)

I'm here because I pay attention to the business outside Ohio, and do a blog (yes, that's a blog) very similar to SDRadio, only aimed at Northeast Ohio.
