NCAA Basketball Tournament

Another topic for discussion for sport fan broadcasters:

NCAA Basketball Tournament:

1. Which networks carried the tournaments and what years?
2. Who has best coverage?
3. What was the best Tournament for matchup and upset?

NBC had it until 1982 when CBS took over. ESPN ran early round tournament games from about 86 thru 93 maybe. CBS has had every game since the mid 90's

1963-1965?: Championship game aired on ABC's Wide World of Sports
1966-67: Syndicated coverage, including semifinals and final.
1968-72: NBC carried semifinals and finals nationally, with regional network and syndicated coverage of earlier rounds.
1973-present: Final Four doubleheader on Saturday, championship on Monday; Aired on NBC til '81, on CBS ever since.
NBC and syndicated coverage of earlier rounds, through 1979.
ESPN began first round coverage in '80. CBS added late-night, tape-delayed coverage of one game on Friday nights, in addition to ESPN coverage. ESPN covers first round through 1990.
1991-present: CBS covers entire tournament.

I'm too young to remember much from NBC's coverage, but CBS has done an amazing job on their games, much like they did with NBA coverage in the 70s and 80s (NBA TV and ESPN Classic often air a lot of NBA on CBS telecasts). One of the most memorable NCAA title games for many was the 1979 Final between Larry Bird and Indiana State and Magic Johnson and Michigan State. This game helped propel the NCAA tournament into bigger promience, especially today (way back when, the NIT basketball tournament had a bigger promience nationally, partially thanks to it being in New York City and Madison Square Garden), and of course, Magic and Bird not only turned around their college programs (Michigan State was a non-factor in basketball from the 60s through the mid-70s, when Magic came there; Indiana State was a real unknown school outside of the Hooiser State), but their move to the NBA in the fall of 1979 helped rejuvenate a failing league dealing with drug abuse, bad personalities, and an unentertaining style of play (with an exception of some teams like the 76ers).

First-round games were syndicated to home markets up until CBS took over the whole tournament.

Nowadays, doesn't ESPN show the NCAA tourney's play-in game (the winner goes on to play one of the #1 seeds)? IIRC it's held on the Tuesday after Selection Sunday.

NCAA bristles at the term 'play-in'. those teams are already in; that game's part of the tournament.

but your post is right, tuesday in Dayton, 64 vs. 65

True. But what else can they call it? The half round game? ;D
but your post is right,
Thank you.

I always considered that game as filling the 64th berth. All symmetry was lost in the brackets (well, one of them) when they went to 65 teams.

NCAA, you've got more reason to bristle. WEEU Reading, PA's Mitch Gerhart referred to Niagara/FAMU as "the play-in game" in two different sports updates during morning drive yesterday.

And so did the Dayton Daily News. See http://www.daytondailynews.com/s/content/oh/story/sports/college/2007/03/13/ddn031307pizza.html (registration required) .

And so did the Buffalo News. See http://www.buffalonews.com/111/story/30938.html .

Biggest upset & Best tournament moment-----April 4,1983

Gary Bender: "Whittenburg, oh it's a long way"
Billy Packer: "They Won it! On the dunk!"

CBS cameras cut to a shot of Jim Valvano running around the court like a chicken with his head cut off
