NCAA Tournament Canceled

add NASCAR and IndyCar to this list to shut it all down to stop the pandemic outbreak from getting worse in the US. also F1 has stop the season for now too.

https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/nascar-indycar-postpone-racing-coronavirus-concerns-1284520

even if this outbreak has a higher survival/recovery rate in terms of human body recovery from first getting ill, the effects are gonna be felt for the next decade, we are heading for Recession and if we have a hard time recovering from this, it could become the second great depression economy wise. this is a big disaster in the financial sense.

ESPN said tonight that the NCAA was considering a shorter tournament, maybe 16 teams, to play in April, but decided against it.

ESPN also says the NBA expects the suspension to last at least 30 days. They report there's a "doomsday provision" in the contract that would allow owners not to pay players. Meanwhile players are raising funds to compensate arena workers during the suspension.

So apart from now splitting up the Hawaii Five O finale, and being able to squeeze in a couple of those MacGyver episodes they’re flush with, no real shock. No one should be surprised on short notice that they’d plug in some reruns of regular shows.

No live weekend sports will be a convenient excuse for some stations like WREG in Memphis to be even more infomercial crazy so I hope the networks will all come up with something to keep that from happening.

CBS is airing classic games. NBC is airing last years Players. ESPN is just a mess.

Big news as the NCAA cancels its annual tournament:

https://www.espn.com/mens-college-b...8893285/ncaa-tournaments-canceled-coronavirus

Obviously will impact CBS and TBS TV as well as radio coverage and revenues related to the tournament.

Plus it will affect seniors who hoped to get attention for their pro careers.

I would think that there have been plenty of scouts that have noticed their talents for the NBA, but it will be interesting to see how it will play out at the NBA draft. And even if they do go on undrafted, I am sure they can still sign as a free agent.

And informercials cause one harm....how?

It may not "harm" anymore but it's a definite indication of a station management's greed that they would rather fill any non-network time with infomercials rather than to put on something that people might actually want to watch. For now at least the networks are coming up with something to fill the time, which is what they should have been doing with any non-sports time on weekends all along rather than turning most or all of the afternoon over to local stations who do nothing but fill it with infomercials.

On the other hand, with all of the restrictions on what people can do, there's not much else left. Management still has to meet expenses and pay staff during a time when programming options aren't very good, advertising will likely be lower, and costs remain the same. I don't call that greed.

"Greed"=helping to pay the bills. Keep people employed. Maintenance. News (where applicable). Donations. No, it's not saying things would collapse without it, but when you're responsible for those P&L statements, every little contribution to the bottom line helps. If you can do that in a darned-near throwaway time period so that you can focus investments elsewhere, when and where it matters more, then by all means--greed is good, as the quote goes.

The networks should not just be filling time to appease some small number of people who have an inexplicable issue with infomercials. Don't like them? Change the channel. Problem solved.

Now CBS and AT&T will pay the staff that were to cover the games

Its been an onslaught of bad breaks for those working in the sports video production and operations industry over the past week as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic. But finally, a bit of good news.

CBS Sports will pay all technicians and utilities (including freelancers) who were scheduled to work March Madness.

CBS Sports and Turner Sports will pay all technicians and utilities – including freelancers – who were scheduled to work the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, Final Four Weekend, and the Division II and Division III National Championship Games.

In an email to members of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, IBEW Director of Broadcasting and Telecommunications Robert Prunn stated that CBS Sports would pay “straight time hours” for the days in which each professional was booked and also make “corresponding benefit contributions to the Flex Plan and Entertainment Industry 401K plan.” It also added that “payment will be made in weekly payroll over the next few weeks, just as if you were working.”
