If you're only talking about scripted, prime time series, then that's a possibility. If you're talking about any network show other than news or sports, then you have to include Johnny Carson, Bob Keeshan, and Dick Clark, for starters.

Yeah I should have thrown in "on prime time TV". The international record for prime time TV has gotta be William Roache, who has played Ken Barlow on the British show "Coronation Street" since 1960.

And if you are following the 18-49 ratings of SVU, it is doing dreadfully this year. I'm willing to guess that this season could be the last unless they improve the plots and they begin building up the supporting characters. Imagine if Ice-T became the department head of SVU!

Not mentioned in the various news reports, but a reality is that Harmon has aged out of the role. Any real-life Leroy Jethro Gibbs would have retired with a generous government/military pension years ago.

We should point out that Ice-T is six years older than Mariska Hargitay, another example of an actor about to age out of the role.

With Harmon leaving, can someone who's already on the show fill the void? Will they hire a high profile actor to take Harmon's place? I'm sure CBS offered Harmon a ton of money to return.
