Ned?

So who all gets regular phone calls from our pal Ned, the radio groupie?

Good old Ned...is he still around?!

When I worked in Sherman in the mid 70's, this kid would call on the request line and say "hey Steve, it's your old friend Ned calling...". He'd ask all about what our station was doing.
I go to KVIL and on my first night, I answer the phone and "...hey Steve, it's your old friend Ned..." ...and every station I have worked at in Dallas, I have heard from Ned...
in the late 90's we relocated for a couple of years to Austin and I worked at a station there...and sure enough one day..."hey Steve..." Ned called me while he was there visiting or something!!

I learned a couple years ago from a guy who called me while I was on the air at ABC Network who had listened to one of our affiliates up north...he told me he was a blind man and had lived in some sort of halfway house for blind people in Fort Worth and met this guy named "Ned" who was CRAZY about radio and knew every single person on the air in Dallas and other places...I was surprised and said "I know who he is, he calls me sometimes..". Come to find out, Ned is also blind (which I already knew) and lives at this place in Fort Worth and his only passion in living is listening to the radio and calling jocks to get the latest "scuttlebutt". The thing that's funny is over the years, Ned has HAD impressive information...I think a lot of people would tell him stuff thinking he was just some goofy listener...what they didn't know was he'd turn right around and call every other station and tell them what he knew! I learned quickly not to tell NED anything important!
Ned would say "hey Steve, I heard Magic has a new PD..." Sure enough, the next day the story would break..."hey Steve, I heard Stevens and Pruit are out at the Eagle..."
Ned...whatta guy.
We should all go over there and surprise him some day.

I never got a cal from Ned but I did, on more than one occasion, play "From A Jack To A King," by Ned Miller. But...I guess that doesn't count. DARN, DARN, DARN...as Herman Munster used to say! Come to think of it, I think Fred Gwynne said that a bunch too! ;>)

I've been talking to "our ol' buddy Ned" since 1990 at CD-107, and just like Eberhardt, Ned has followed me to every station, even found me when I wasn't on the air.

Ned even wrangled a friend's cell and home number from an unwitting spouse, so she gets his calls pretty often on her own time...Ya gotta draw the line somewhere on that stuff!

Model planes? Nope, ya got me there!

Can't say I have ever talked to Ned, but there is a "Charlie" who frequently calls. From what I have heard, it sounds like Charlie and Ned are in similar situations.

We've got a "Jody," too (trust me, it's NOT Jody Dean) who calls the traffic line pretty often...usually just to talk about the old days of radio and to check on "Papa Smurf" (his name for John McCarty.)

Where is John McCarty now?

John works for the best traffic service in town (and the country, for that matter), and is doing an excellent job as Ops Manager for our Dallas operations.

Re: Ned

Perhaps the name "Papa Smurf" was inspired by the year his softball team sported those bright red uniforms. I could see it then. While I have not seen him in about 13 years, I am sure he, like Kenny Rogers, has not cut loose (no pun intended) of that beard! -very classy John; and Kenny.

I love that guy.

I don't post very often-I guess you can say I am a lurker. But when I saw the post about Ned I had to put my two cents in...

I get calls from Ned everytime I am on the air at 98.7 K-LUV. If we are talking about the same guy he always calls on the request line and asks me about the lastest radio news. For awhile he was convinced that the Twister was going to change formats and wanted to know what I knew-which was absolutely nothing. There was a time a few months ago where he hadn't called for a few weeks and I became concerned. But he showed up again one Saturday night wanting to know the latest. He also likes to talk football. When I told him I didn't like the Indianapolis Colts because they snuck out of Baltimore one night when I was a kid he decided he didn't like them either for that same reason.

I always look forward to my brief chats with Ned. It doesn't matter what time I am on the air-he always shows up.
