NEED A WNOX 990AM EXPERT

Hi there!

I'm making a trip to Knoxville this weekend and I thought I'd take a few hours to see where my father began his radio career. He was doing overnights at WNOX in '64 or '65. I believe he would do his show from the transmitter site. Wondering if anyone knows the address for the 990 transmitter and if it's the same site as it was in '65. Also, what's the old studio building on Whittle Springs Road being used for now? I saw on Google Maps that it looks like some sort of a church?

Any information would be really appreciated! My Email is [email protected]

Thanks!

Brian

smellygoat, I don't know all the answers to your questions, but try posting on the Eastern Tennessee board. That's really the board for Knoxville.

I do know this: WNOX-AM 990 is now WNML-AM "The Sports Animal" (a simulcast with FM's WNML 99.1 and WNRX 99.3). The WNOX calls are now on FM 100.3 (news/talk).

WNML-AM 990's transmitter is (coordinates 36° 2' 37" N 83° 53' 54" W) on Anderson Road near Tazewell Pike in N. Knoxville.

Enjoy your trip to Knoxville. Hope this helps!

Maybe it's too late to meet your weekend, but the AM 990 transmitter site is off Beverly Road in Knoxville. 4 Towers. 3 of them are self supported and one is guyed. It's visible from Interstate 640 if you know exactly where to look, otherwise take the Mall Road exit, turn left at Target, bear right at the fork in the road and make a sharp right turn just past the huge metal warehouse for the steel company. I'm sure this site was in use long before 1964. The studio building on Whittle Springs Road (the WNOX "Auditorium") is at least partially being used as a church. It was a TV station for awhile after the radio moved out. WNOX also had studios on Gay Street prior to that. One of the early locations is prominently noted as such if you take the 'birthplace of Country Music' walking tour downtown. The building is vacant but still stands. There was a later location at the north end of Gay Street that I believe is now a vacant lot. AM 990 is now WNML and the current studio is at 4711 Old Kingston Pike in the Citadel cluster.
