Need advice what to do with classic airchecks

For whatever reason, I have collected literally hundreds of hours of airchecks from all over the country (with an emphasis on the Seattle market, but many others in markets like Chicago, Atlanta, Miami, Dallas, Houston, and many more), from the period of 1975 to 1990. They are sitting in boxes in cassette form. Does anyone have any advice on what to do with them? I don't necesarilly want to make money with these, (but wouldn't be adverse to it!), but just have an inate feeling there is a lot of great, classic stuff that is just sitting there. Should I let these sit and deteriorate, or is there a higher reason to move them to another level? Someone who has some expertise in this area please let me know, either on the public site, or in a personal message available on this site. I would be happy to offer more details on what I have, but I need some guidance here.

You could consider donating them to Reelradio.com

Or, you could post your previous message on the boards serving the markets you've taped the most (Chicago, Atlanta, Miami, Dallas, Houston, etc). You'll probably find someone there who is interested and doesn't necessarily come here to the airchecks board.

For instance, I'd be interested in what you have from Seattle from 1984-1987.

You can reach me at [email protected]

Thanks jaydio. Honestly, I recorded them as a hobby, never thought anyone would be interested in them down the line. Frankly, it will take me many hours to discertain what I have and what is worth sharing. In a perfect world I would sell the whole set as one piece, but I guess I would need to go through and describe what each contains. That is the challenge! I know there is good stuff there, but also some mediocre "day to day" broadcasts as well. Perhaps I should spend some time outlining what each tape contains, then they might have more interest to radio/audio fans. Again, I'm not looking to make a big profit, but the time and energy of outlining the content is worth something. I'll try to keep this post updated.

What do you have from Dallas?

As I said, I need to find time to catalog these tapes. But, in general, I would record whatever was on during the time that I was taping. I made an effort to get PM drive on music stations, (mostly the top40's and AC's), then try and capture atleast a little of the morning shows the next morning. You have to undertand this was all done during business trips, so my taping was a little "hit and miss". However, these are scoped, I didn't care about the music, just the talk and production elements. I also tried to capture a little of the AM flavor, concentrating on the big signals especially. What I have I am certain doesn't exist anywhere else, because it was so random. If you are serious about Dallas, I will try and check out that particular market for you. My tapes are simply labled by city...no other details. But, as a jock myself, I would be pleasantly surprised to hear a 'check of me that I didn't know existed!

I am certainly open to looking for tapes that individuals might be interested in. Perhaps for a shipping fee, and a modest fee for my time and effort I could accomodate anyones request.

Here are the markets that I have...mostly 1980's...

Seattle (1974-1990)
Portland (many years represented, inc. late 70's)
San Francisco (early 80's)
Los Angeles (a lot of 70's here)
Chicago (poor quality 70's, better quality 80's)
Detroit (limited, but some great CKLW stuff from 1981)
Atlanta (1987)
Miami & Tampa (mostly 80's)
Boston (limited, early 90's)
New York (including Stern on NNNNBC)
Dallas/Houston (80's)
Oklahoma City(1985)
Some Phoenix, some Denver, too. I think I have some Cleveland, Pittsburgh, and Cincy too.

I don't have the equipment or energy to transfer to mp3...so if anyone has interest in anything above, let me know via personal message and I will be happy to consider look at making some sort of trade arrangements. (Gotta use that language here, you know!)

But I'll never forgive myself for not asking this question....is there any possibility of making money selling classic airchecks? What about the legalities? Is this material covered under copyrights, or is it public domain? What if the station no longer exists in its previous form or ownership? Would any copyrights, servicemarks, or trademarks still be in effect? Then what about the actual talent? Do they have rights to their on-air material? Just wondering...my guess is this is a great big "grey area".

And - with unscoped airchecks - what about THE MUSIC? If the RIAA thinks nothing about pouncing on a 12-year-old using Limewire, I'd say an aircheck collector would be a sitting duck.

If you have any K104 or KNOK, let me know...

Well, all my stuff is scoped, so I'm guessing that wouldn't be an issue, but you never know...

Don't know until I catalog...but generally I only airchecked Top40's and AC's. Sorry for my ignorance, but what were the formats of these?
