Need IPA Module for Continental 815A

A

Our contract engineer has been told that Continental no longer makes an IPA module for the 815A 5KW FM transmitter. He sent the one he has to P-tek in California and they told him it couldn't be repaired.

Does anyone have any ideas about where he could find a replacement.

We are still using a 815A as a main transmitter at one of our stations. The unit has been well taken care of and looks brand new but should I be concerned with it becoming obsolete?

I got an IPA module for a 15-20 KW Continental several years ago. Ordered from Continental and when it came in it was made by Silicone Valley Power Amps. This was a 700 watt module.
You may want to check with them, www.svpa.com It has been in service about 8 years and survived a blower failure. Seem pretty rugged.

P-Tek used to rebuild those modules from scratch for a fixed price, and I believe there was another outfit who also would do it bu their name escapes me. It's been a few years since I needed to have one rebuilt by them but I thought they still did it.

I'll second the Silicone Valley people. Had to purchase one of their amps to replace a 700 watt IPA for a Harris FM25K several years ago. Had to mount it like a little side car since it would not fit in the transmitter. But it worked like a charm.

Silicon Valley can provide a loaner and rebuild what you have if it's rebuildable. They made these for Harris also.

Hopefully you bypassed it and are on at a lower power level now. The 815 was good about this No power supply metering for the ipa power supply...make sure the power supply is good. after a lightning hit who knows,

Their website has 2 versions of IPA they made for harris amd Continental. Take a look and see which one you have. A new one frpm Sil Valley is cheaper than a new one from either company direct as Harris and Continental have a new supplier.

Have a Silicon Valley 700 watt power amp on a NCE station locally. Has been generally reliable, although I did have their Cherokee power supply tank when the little fans died.

But that's not a problem with the SV module, since you would have other means of powering the module in your Continental.

You might also try Nicom. I believe I've seen that they make modules for a reasonable price to work with Big H and Continental.

I do know this. If you ever have the misfortune of ever having to mess with a Harris, DO NOT buy a module from them. They are a total overpriced rip-off along with totally obnoxious shipping prices. If you determine you really don't need it they'll hit you with a 15 percent restock fee which is a huge chunk because they charge so much for the module in the first place. I will NEVER bother with getting one from them again. B(#ards!
