Need substitute for EV 309A shock mount for RE20s.

I have to hand it to Electro-Voice. It's not every company that can design a product that fails every single time, but they've managed to do it with the 309A shock mount. I've cursed these things regularly over the years, but the latest batch of 10 I received when I rebuilt two studios last year have been worse than usual. The thumb screws that go into the part that screws onto the mic stand are made of a particularly soft metal in this batch and they've ALL stripped out.

It won't help me this time around, as I've already replaced all the thumb screws with something better, but I'd really like to make these last 10 the last 309As I purchase. Has anyone found an acceptable substitute that doesn't fall apart?

I've never liked the 309A. Have you considered using the RE-20's more robust stock mic mount on a damping mic arm such as that from Yellowtec?

"Such is the stability and damping of YELLOWTEC suspensions that adjustment
can be made to the microphone position even with the fader open."

Kind Regards,
David

That's a thought... I have some Yellowtec monitor mounts and really like them. I'm not sure it would help though. The problem isn't actually noise from moving the mic during use, it's noise from hosts whacking the countertop while on the air. Knowing how bad the 309A is, when I installed RE27s for my talk station, I tried forgoing the shock mounts and just using the included stand adaptor. Really bad idea. Every time one of them would whack the counter (frequent) you'd hear a reverberant bonnnng on the air. This is with the heavy duty OC White mic arms.

The Mika arms might not bonnnng as badly though. I'm not sure if they have springs in them or not.

Does using the LF roll-off switch help with the desktop noise?

They have springs, but they are damped, so no reverb FX ;) ... Another thought...You could put sheets of thick rubber (pieces of mousepad?) between each stand's mounting plate and the table top to create some isolation that way. Then the quality of shock mounting at the mic itself would matter less.

Kind Regards,
David
