Negative Listeners

Hey everyone.

So I was working the boards the past couple of days and I had a couple of listeners call in and lay down some negative comments about the station.

I wanted to know how you would handle it. Just tell them thanks for the call and have a nice day...try to convince why your station is better....or just hang up.

Say, "Thanks for your imput, I'll pass it along" and hang up.

That's about all you can do. It doesn't pay to be rude or discourteous to anyone, and usually if you let someone just rant for a good while, then they're usually happy that you listened to them long enough without hanging up. That's pretty much what they want...to feel like their opinions matter.

Guess those customer service skills in my retail youth finally paid off.

I would just say, "Hey, you don't have to listen." and then I would say Michael Savage's famous line, "Get off my airwaves and never call me again."

I would trace the call and send the station's fleet of hit men after the caller, but, then again, I have a bad temper.

I miss the guy who used to call Y97 around 6:30 on Saturday and Sunday mornings and scream, "PLAY SOME DEAD, MAN!!!!!!!!"

And there was the psycho girl who thought she was hot about 3AM, and if you hung up on her (which you had to), she'd call every line in the station in sequence for the next hour....

On second thought I don't really miss that....

Those days are NEVER over, son. Here's why...

I knew a jock in another market who got a call from a drunk listener one day laying into him about the jock and the station. Rather than ignore the guy, the jock verbally
attacked the guy on the air, even going so far as to single him out by name. Turned out the guy was the son of a major car dealer who signed a $5,000 account with the
station. New client. I know that doesn't sound like a lot of money, but the account could have doubled in a year's time, since dealers do spend lots of money on radio.

The dealer canceled his contract, threatened to sue the station, and the jock was sent packing.

Always ask yourself...is it worth losing your job or ruining your career over? I say not. You never know just who might be listening.
