Neil, Paul, Eric, & Bonnie

Not a new morning team but 4 artists with new material that stands virtually no chance of getting Providence radio airplay unless there's a crossover AC hit: Neil Young, Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton, & Bonnie Raitt. I'm not faulting any station for not playing their new stuff if it doesn't fit format, but there you have 4 reasons why Providence needs a triple-A station. Stripped of the false theory that the format has limited appeal, it's nothing more than AC radio for people raised on rock who have grown out of an HJY format but not ready for AC. If a new station debuted by programming new material by only the artists with name recognition rather than new unknowns along with classic rock without a real edge (ala Cool 102) it would be an accessible format for this market. A good portion of a current playlist would consist of songs being played on other formats anyway (Rob Thomas, Stones, etc). Then after you test the waters, you get a little more adventurous but only a little.

Over the past couple of years, artists like Springsteen, John Fogerty, Van Morrison, John Mellancamp, Tracy Chapman, Melissa Etheridge, The Wallflowers, Blues Traveler, & even Bob Dylan have released material that has gotten no airplay in Providence. How long before U2 & Dave Matthews aren't considered loud enough for HJY?

Maybe no station needs to add this music with the format line-up we now have but some station needs to look at the format. If it weren't for cluster programming someone would be doing it. Triple-A & the baggage the format carries is a negative only within the radio industry.

Neil Young, Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton, & Bonnie Raitt: has anyone out there ever heard of them?

I've been wishing for a real Triple A station for years, something on the order of WXRV in northern Massachusetts.

Oh yes. I get to hear them only every 3-4 months or so when I'm up North as they broadcast on a frequency in Campton, NH where I was. I like WBOS, but think I like The River even better. As far as lack of familiarity objections, in addition to the new material all the non-currents were recognizable including Something by The Beatles so we're not talking deep cuts. It can be done & presented in a market like Providence without an affected coffee house mentality. If I had the money I could even staff it with jocks currently on the air in Providence & they wouldn't have to change their style one bit.
