Neil Rogers as UM baseball radio color man...

Just curious, I know this is an era Neil rarely mentions, but does anyone have distinct memories of the broadcasts? Who was the play-by-play man? Do any audio recordings exist (I believe these aired on WIOD at the time, I think this was the late 70s/very early 80s)? Any help from the experts on the board is very much appreciated!

Neil Rogers as UM baseball radio color man?

Funny... I always thought he was an old fat white guy.

Neil was and probably still is an outstanding baseball color analyst. He did so so along with play by play man Dave Lamont (now heard every morning on WIOD) who is no slouch himself when it comes to PBP. However, I think the UM baseball games were actually broadcast on WKAT, but I am not certain.

Faraway, thank you very much for the insight. However, I have a lingering doubt about it being LaMont for some reason. Was he already in the business at that point in time, meaning is he old enough to have been doing those games back in the late 70s/early 80s?

Nevertheless, thank you, you are the first person that's ever been able to shed some light on the subject!

LOL Dave, not bad, not bad. I have enjoyed perousing your site for a couple of years now by the way. I was hoping you might have had some details regarding my question, have you ran across anything/anyone that can shed light on Neil's time w/ UM baseball?

Thanks ... Sorry, I don't know anything about that.
I don't follow sports and I was really surprised to read
that Neil did sports. Seems just as strange as Rush doing so.

I see you're new on the board... Welcome. It's a lot of fun.
And an easy way to waste a LOT of time.

I believe it was Bob Griese. It was the early to mid-80's on one of the UHF Channels 33 or 39.

Here's what I know - over the years, Neil has mentioned with fondness his days providing color commentary for UM baseball. On most of those occasions, he stated that Dave Lamont was his play by play partner. And yes, that it was the same Dave Lamont you hear now on WIOD. I don't know the exact years nor the station...although I think it was WKAT, possibly what was then WNWS, but doubt it was WIOD as Neil didn't start there until about 1989.

Games were on W-News

If I'm not mistaken, the games were broadcast on WNWS/790, I remember seeing an already sun-faded "HURRICANES on WNWS" sticker long, long ago...Logo had the call letters in what's defined these days as the "Courier" font on your Word Processing software (ie typewriterish font).

Faraway, I appreciate the details you provide here. It might very well have been LaMont then, and yes, Neil did not start on WIOD until September 1987, so the games could have very well been on WKAT during the timeline I'm describing of the late 70s/early 80s. Of course, it could have been a deal where the broadcast rights belonged to another station and he was allowed to work the games only, kind of like what was being contemplated w/ Mandich and the Dolphins games earlier this year, but I doubt it.

Mr. Radio, I was actually referring to radio broadcasts, I'm sorry I didn't clarify that originally. I don't think Neil ever was on TV, except for his stint on WAMI in '98/'99.

Neil is a multi-faceted guy, and you kind of pick that up by listening to him over a period of time. He's very well versed in sports and I think used to attend a lot of stuff in person when he was living in Miami full-time; I know he was a Dolphins and Marlins season ticket holder for many years.

Yes, the board is quite addicting I agree, and yours pretty much has the same effect on me! Thanks for the reply!

Boss, thank you for the info. What you say also makes sense, as I believe Neil's next stop after WKAT was indeed WNWS. The fact that you saw the bumper sticker advertising the connection to the 'Canes broadcasts kind of clinches it.

Stuart, thank you for replying, and as you know from my e-mails to you, I'm a big fan of your work. Good call on Sonny Hirsch, he was heavily intertwined with UM sports for so long in one capacity or another. It might very well have been him.

Sonny was long a part of UM sports but there was a spell he wasn't - there was a time that Dave Lamont did PBP and Neil Rogers did color for UM baseball. This is not an arguable point. Neil has discussed this many times over the years. The only things in question - the exact years and station - I am now guessing it was WNWS.

Re: Neil Rogers as UM baseball radio color man?

As a 20+ year listener to Neil Rogers, I have heard him mention his days of doing Hurricane Baseball. He mentioned Griese and that "little Brian" Griese (of the Broncos, Dolphins and Bucs) used to come with daddy Bob to the games. He also mentioned working Dave LaMont. Neil often says the memory of LaMont is his atrocious "farting in the booth". So, the answer is Neil worked with both Lamont and Griese.
